Flying Show prevents Poet’s bid for hat-trick

By: Stay Thirsty   May 31 , 2017

M Bobby trained Flying Show halted Poet`s bid to complete a hat-trick of wins by recording a facile win in the 1200 metres Nagamangala Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the highest rated race of the day on Wednesday at Mysore. For punters who were starved of racing because of the cancellation of races at Bangalore due to rain and other issues, Wednesday`s racing was a welcome affair though the races did not run kindly for them.

Jockey Prashant Dhebe had Poet well placed to strike but the favourite failed to show the required acceleration and went down tamely. Flying Show who got a good run along the rails, moved up swiftly but jockey Prabhakaran was unable to keep the horse on a straight course as the lesser fancied runner drifted right cross causing Poet to change course. Flying Show went on to win comfortably and as such, the resultant objection for interference did not have any strong grounds to be considered seriously by the Stewards. Phelps ran on to take the third place ahead of long-time leader Amazing Connection.

Feroz Khan trained Brown Beauty who had let down a considerable following in the past, showed up in a different light in the 1200 metres Nairn Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Star Atrium showed up first in the straight with Brown Beauty hot on his heels. The latter managed to go ahead inside the final furlong and established a winning lead. Brown Beauty`s task would have been tougher but Nikka who produced a late rally went wide under pressure as jockey Jagadeesh was unable to control the outward drift which made a critical difference to the outcome of the race. Dare The Don edged out Star Atrium to grab the third place. Michael Eshwer trained Fjord duly won the lower division of the race as a firm favourite. Fjord did not begin brightly but dragged himself to the front within the first furlong and thereafter it was a one-horse race despite the hiccup of the saddle having moved from its place. Chief`s Arrow managed to push Jersey Bride to the third place.

Eshwer trained Saturn proved to be too good for the opposition in the 1200 metres Mysore Plate, a race for three-year-olds. Hitting the front from the very beginning, the progeny of Arabian Gulf, Saturn was not unduly troubled by the rest of the runners as she checked in well clear of Amaris. Silvery Grey necked out favourite Power of God to take the third place. The favourite did not have the spark to make a mark.

Seven-year-old mare Catwalk Queen found her winning rhythm after a longish break as she steamrolled the opposition in the 1400 metres H Krishna Naik Memorial Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Catwalk Queen strode past the opposition with consummate ease in the final furlong to win as she pleased from As Always and the favourite Young Gallant.

Rakesh trained I Do It For You brought of the biggest upset of the day in another race meant for lowest category horses namely Balamuiri Plate, run over six furlongs. Golden Cruise led in earnest with Iroko breathing down in second place. However, the complexion of the race transformed once I Do It For You showed up on the wide outside. The long shot stormed ahead leaving the two front-runners to battle it out for the second place. Iroko managed to nose out Golden Cruise for the runner-up berth in the final stride.

Girinath trained Ephialities attracted one-sided support in the 1400 metres Prince Regent Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The firm conviction of the punters was not misplaced as Ephialities assumed control of the race from the beginning to win the race without facing any serious challenge. Alecia got the second place ahead of Sancy who got the better of Star Struck to claim the third spot.

S M Johnson trained Veni Vidi Vici whose three career wins had been only over a sprint, showed her prowess over the extended trip of seven furlongs in the Kolar Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, winning a race after 417 days. Veni Vidi Vici came through the middle in the straight to grab the lead and recorded an easy win over Scipio and the late rallying Campeon who finished on strongly from a long way back.
