Sandesh timed his challenge to a nicety on Baracchus to enable the son of Razeen to score a narrow win over Speed Hawk in the 1400 metres Squanderer Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. Sandesh who had fared poorly last week, had a double for the day, with first timer Multiple emerging victorious in a race meant for maidens.

The feature event had an open look about with half a dozen horses reckoned to have a chance of scoring. Betting was largely focussed on Integrated with muted support for Top Spot, Rafa and Baracchus. Baracchus does well when he is given a chance to run at his own pace in the early part of the race and then shaken up for the task in the straight. Speed Hawk shaped to steal the race as he had a good break over the rest even as Baracchus was working his way from behind through a crowded field. To the credit of Sandesh, he chose to make a ground saving effort rather than to go wide to get a clear run. The tactic helped the cause of the lesser fancied runner as Baracchus devoured ground and had enough momentum to get past Speed Hawk in the final moments of the race. Rafa held off Michaela for the third place. Integrated ran a poor race, finishing down the field while Topspot reportedly bled during the race.

Oasis Breeze and As Times Goes By had the benefit of race runs and were accorded the status being fancied runners in the 1100 metres Royal Tern Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. But both these horses had given run-of-the-mill performances and the run advantage was not going to be of much help to the prospects of these horses. Kolkata challenger Multiple had been showing out in the workouts and was making his debut. Though the trip was reckoned to be sharp, Multiple was keen enough to stay in touch with pace-setting Ocean Breeze and then breezed past the front-runner inside the final 300 metres and scored an easy win over late rallying As Time Goes By. Highland Wind ran on from behind to edge out Ocean Breeze to save place money.

Gregory Sandhu trained Revelnation made amends for his loss close home on the last occasion with a late charge to get past the front-running Gypsy in the 1400 metres H B Gundappa Gowda Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Gypsy had let huge expectations last time out as the horse was ridden from way off the pace. Now despite the wide outside draw, Gypsy was rushed to the front by apprentice Nazerul Alam but the progeny of Burden of Proof was caught up with in the final moments of the race. The change in the running pattern of Gypsy came as a surprise. El Fenix got the better of Force Ensign to get the third place. Tax Free raced up with the field behind Gypsy before running out of steam in the final furlong.

Prithviraj trained Regal Music had recorded a runaway win last time out and repeated the act in the 1200 metres Tudor Jet Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Regal Music bolted to the front and was so far ahead of the rest that the jockey could ease the horse long way from home. The four-year-old won pulling up by more than nine lengths over Grecian Light. Happy Hours returned good dividends on place betting. The quality of Regal Music`s win was such that he should maintain his winning streak despite a stiff penalty that he is bound to incur for this run. He surely appears a better class animal.

The big made Lochinvar from Kolkata showed a reversal of form when he finished aggressively to win the 1600 metres Bold Gesture Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Incidentally, Bold Gesture had provided the trainer of Lochinvar Bharath Singh with his first and only Bangalore Derby winner. Lochinvar chased Ninon well into the straight and got past the front-runner inside the final 100 yards despite shying away under the strong use of the whip by jockey Srinath. Satinette who failed to hold a forward position, finished on well to take the third place.

Arizona looked set to provide newly licensed trainer Parvati Byramji with her first win but the four-year-old filly went down close home in the 1400 metres Noble Princess Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan allowed Arizona to run too freely in front and the runaway tactics told on the fancied runner who slackened close home enabling the lesser fancied Aine to edge past the front-runner. Noble Splendor was third. During the paddock parade, favourite Raw Gold reared up, throwing off jockey Suraj Narredu from the saddle. The jockey bruised his shoulder in the fall. An X-Ray showed no fracture but Suraj is still feeling the pain of the impact of the fall. He is hoping to be back in action by Tuesday.
