Godfathers` throw a protective shield around Christopher Alford

By: Goldie Boy   July 26 , 2017

Trainer Bharath Singh`s favourite, Tweedle Dee (Christopher Alford-up), scored a decisive victory in the 1,200m Moon Mission Handicap, Wednesday`s feature event. The jockey also partnered the trainer`s other favourite, Gryffindor, to victory and finished the day with a double. His tally could have been three had the champion jockey given another hot favourite, Friendship, a purposeful ride. The afternoon also witnessed the visiting jockey, A. Imran Khan, and the local lad Hindu Singh, notching up a brace of wins apiece.

Tweedle Dee, the 5/2 favourite, was well in at the weights, the horse had to his credit two wins from as many starts in the last edition of the season. The four-year-old, therefore, found the muddy going -- thanks to 72 hours of relentless rains -- to his advantage. The horse was held back in the third or the fourth berths as Bang Bang, Cocoanut and Gift of Valentine made the early running. Once given reins, the Juniper son left the opposition struggling for the minor placings, for which Shafiq Khan`s late-finishing and top-weighted runner, Flanker (app Ranidan Singh) proved best of the rest.

Alford had started his day on a victorious note, following a workman-like victory of Bharath`s youngster, Gryffindor, in the 1,100m Arizona Handicap. The 9/4 favourite, too, was held back in the fourth or the fifth berths as speedsters like Gimme Credit, Pollyana and Words tried to upset his rhythm. However, in the final stretch, the Lucifer Sam son pounced on the front runners to retire to victory in an easy manner.

The stage was also set for Alford to coast home with another favourite, Friendship – from Arti Doctor`s stable, in the 1,400m Adriana Plate. The filly`s expanding odds, and a sizeable wagering on Surgical Strike (S. John), did worry punters but the scenario hardly indicated that Friendship was about to give a jolt. The 7/4 favourite, was taken to a start-to-finish mission, with a comfortable lead of three lengths, in the final furlong, over a struggling Surgical Strike. Alford pretended worried and started throwing glances but the horse went about his task. However, in the final 150m Alford managed to unbalance himself, allowing Surgical Strike to pass.

The hell broke out loose, prompting stewards to open an enquiry; which however, turned out to be eyewash. Alford`s Godfathers gave a ‘clean chit` to the jockey on the pretext that Friendship`s hind-leg action had worried Alford, and thus the defeat.

Jockey A. Imran, too, made his visit a profitable one. Starting off with the victory of Patrick Quinn`s So Regal in the day`s opener, 1,100m Safari Handicap, the jockey also guided home the stable`s highly rated filly, Alshafa, to an impressive victory in the lower division of the Mariinsky Cup.

So Regal`s victory was on the cards, in view of the speedster`s lighter weight and a forward run. The Opportunist son was, however, continuously disturbed, upfront, by another speedy customer, Colourful Dreams (app. Nikhil Naidu). A visibly tired So Regal, therefore, faced a challenge, inside the final 200m, form an unexpected quarters -- trainer Deepak Karki`s Bournville (app Jorawar Singh).

A. Imran just about managed to head-out Bournville at the post but a touch-and-go skirmish, passing the distance-post, opened a possibility of winning the race in the stewards` room. Stewards, however, took a lenient view of the infringement in favour of So Regal and allowed the results to stand.

Quinn`s Alshafa, finally, delivered the goods, and with relatively ease. A, Imran rode a copy-book race on the costly purchase – allowing the Multidimensional-Veena`s Pet daughter to settle a handy fourth, behind, the speedy Footloose, the second favourite, Lady Two and the rank-outsider, Kaartiken. It turned to be a no race when the jockey gave the 13/10 favourite the ‘go` signal, nearing the distance-post.

Trainer Manvendra Singh`s Theo had a mixed season last winter after showing much promise in his debut year. The horse, ridden by Hindu Singh, had an easy measure of a well-perfumed opposition in the Bold Raider Handicap.

Hindu also guided trainer James McKeown`s less-fancied runner, Mizuno, to an exciting victory over a fancied runner, My Lady Luck (Akash Rajput), in the upper division of the Mariinsky Cup, despite the fact that the slated trip was quite sharp to the liking of grey five-year-old.
