Multitude finally breaks the jinx with fine win

  July 30 , 2017

Vijay Singh trained Multitude proved third time lucky as jockey Neeraj Rawal did everything right on the progeny of Multidimensional who claimed the Gr 3 Bangalore City Sprint Championship, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Bangalore races. Multitude had twice come tantalizingly close to winning with late efforts but this time out, the timing of the jockey was perfect to get the desired result.

Multitude has proved to be a versatile horse who in recent times has been restricted to sprint after having run well in the Calcutta Classics last season. Multitude was unlucky in the Sprinters Cup as the luck of the race went against the horse. During the ongoing season, he lost twice when he should have won with better luck.

Multitude was the more preferred one in the competitive field that was in the fray. Captain Courage did the job of pace-setting with Siobhan, Shivalik Star and New Prince in close proximity while Multitude was eased in about the fifth or sixth position along the rails. Denny Crane who had scored an upset win last time out, struggled to get into a prominent position from the wide outside draw. Captain Courage failed to sustain his foray in front for long in the homestretch and Siobhan got stronger going into the final furlong. Neeraj Rawal brought the Multitude with a ground saving run along the rails and he was in danger of being baulked for a clear run. However, the favourite showed remarkable alacrity to shoot through to essay a strong challenge to the front-runner. Multitude nailed Siobhan in the shadow of the post and then comfortably held off the late flourish of Smile Stone. Captain Courage weakened to finish fourth. Common Wealth was expected to run a game race though the filly was running after a long layoff and over a sharp trip. However, the filly found the top-quality sprinters tough to handle. Denny Crane`s run was too bad to be true as he finished a dismal last.

Padmanabhan trained Mauritania was running for the first time during the season after having a setback. Though the progeny of Excellent Art was working well, he was short of a run which was bound to put hurdles in his path to victory though he oozes plenty of class. Sana who had the beating of Castlebridge at Kolkata showed out in the paddock parade and there was spirited betting for the filly to give a bold show. The expected support for Torsoro did not materialize. Srinath took Mauritania on a start to finish mission but closer home, was overhauled by Sana. Torsoro and Big Sur finished on strongly to occupy the third and fourth places respectively. Mauritania should make amends next time out.

M K Jadhav trained Themis looked a cut above the rest in the 2000 metres J B Mallaradhya Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 45 to 65 after her noteworthy run in the Fillies Championship. The body weight displayed on the board indicated that the filly had put on 30 kgs since her last run which was misleading because her paddock looks suggested that she was fit as a fiddle. The increase in body weight may have made many to skip a bet on her but they were soon regretting their decision as Themis swamped the field with a powerful effort down the final furlong for an effortless win. Bold March battled hard to retain the runner-up berth from late rallying Fresh Start. Angel Power ran a disappointing race.

Sharat Kumar trained Perfect Legacy was quietly fancied to win the 1400 metres Track Lightning Cup, a race for horses rated 15 to 35 despite the four-year-old gelding not having shown any appreciable form in his last three efforts. Malana was fancied to have it easy but the favourite was found wanting when Perfect Legacy essayed a strong challenge in the final furlong and suffered a tame defeat. Lycurgus who lost some ground at the start, finished with a rattle in the homestretch and just about missed the second spot by a neck.

Neil Darashah trained Chemical Romance who had let down huge expectation in the past came good in the 1200 metres Mount Everest Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Hot N Fire who had been twice withdrawn at the gates, behaved better this time and he led in earnest going into the final furlong. However, Chemical Romance put paid to the hopes of the favourite by getting the better of the front-runner inside the distance post. San Bernardino was faraway third.

Neil had a double for the day as earlier in the day, Mayweather had slammed the opposition in the 1100 metres Xisca Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Favourite Brunesco found the speed displayed by the eventual winner too hot to handle. Zip Code was third.

Altamash Ahmed saddled his first winner of the season when Freedom of Speech proved too good for the field in the 1400 metres Borsalino Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Freedom of Speech had the race at her mercy inside the final 200 metres as she broke into a decisive lead. Ginger Benz who raced a tailed off last, made a good rally in the straight to finish a suggestive second ahead of Shamsadas Girl. St Pauli Girl ran a very disappointing race after a forward effort last time out.

Irish Prince who had so many outings to come down the required handicap mark was seen racing with a sense of purpose in the 1400 metres Meydan Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 20 which is the main forte of trainer Sharat Kumar. Irish Prince produced a strong effort to nail the front-running Granada in the final stride of the race to land the spoils as a well fancied runner. Reverberating was a close third.

Pradeep Annaiah trained Carducci built on his good forward run of last time by resolutely winning the 1200 metres Nanoli Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50 from Rare And Bold. While overahuling the front-running Rare And Bold, the winner slightly rolled in but in no way deterred the chances of the runner-up and as such the resultant objection for interference did not find favour with the stewards.

In a tight finish, Amazing Love held of the challenge of Royal Serenity by a whisker to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Allied Forces Plate, a race for horses rated 15to 35. Humming Bird was third while Odyssey who had a leisurely outing, finished fourth.
