Apache Sunrise re-establishes his credentials

  August 3 , 2017

Neil Darashah trained Apache Sunrise who ended the last season as the highest rated three-year-old of Bangalore bounced back to re-establish his credentials after a solitary poor effort by keeping the challenge of highly thought of Romantic Star at bay to win the Bangalore Summer Million (Gr.3), a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Thursday`s Bangalore races. Jockey Srinath who rode the winner, ended up with a treble.

Romantic Star who had burst on the scene with a smashing win and then followed it up with a runner-up effort to Manifold in the Fillies Championship Stakes was also favoured by the weights and as such, went to the post at very cramped odds. The odds were not reflective of the competitive nature of the race as Apache Sunrise was the seasoned horse and barring one bad run, had proved his credentials with outstanding efforts. Apache Sunrise showed out in the paddock parade and the fact that he was well positioned to take off in the straight ensured that he would go beyond the reach of Romantic Star when it mattered the most.

Jockey Sandesh these days seem to have changed his style of riding. He prefers to sleep at the back which has often seen him lose races with late efforts. The moment he settled Romantic Star in the last position and made no aggressive move well into the straight, the fate of the filly was sealed. In a slow run race, a horse who is reckoned as a sprinter miler will always have the advantage of spurting with the handy lead on hand. This is exactly what happened when Srinath alighted Apache Sunrise to the task and the progeny of Excellent Art quickened brilliantly and went storming ahead of long time pace-setter Cold Frontier. Romantic Star had considerable leeway to cover but fell short in the end. With this performance, Apache Sunrise should prove to be a force to reckon with in the Mysore classics.

Rafa showed some improvement when winning the 1400 metres Tippu Sultan Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Trevor had Rafa lead from the front and the progeny of Mathematician consolidated the position in the final furlong to go beyond the reach of favourite Champagne whose effort from behind could only fetch the second position. Baracchus ran on to finish third.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Kambaku should have gone to the post for the 1600 metres Capricorn Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50, at a short price considering his performances thus far. However, the presence of Dr Logan and Pinyada meant that there was support for these horses which had the difficult task of coming from behind as they are trained to settle in the early part and produce strong efforts in the final furlong. John had Kambaku chase Secret Pursuit well into the straight before storming ahead. Dr Logan showed up on the wide outside after taking the turn wide from the rear position but found the eventual winner having gone beyond his reach. Pinyada made his foray along the inside but was found wanting and had to settle for the third place, a neck behind the runner-up.

Padmanabhan trained Into The Spotlight had worked brilliantly and hence was considered to have an excellent chance of winning the second race of his life. This full brother to the celebrated In The Spotlight had been campaigned mostly in big races but had not shown any flourish. Now taking on a modest lot of horses in the 1400 metres Yeravada Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50, Into The Spotlight swept into the lead from the wide outside draw and tired out the other runners behind by going at a good clip in the hands of jockey Srinath. Into The Spotlight was hailed a winner long way from home. Favourite Vice Admiral came from a long way back to occupy the second lace ahead of Raw Gold and Super Smart in a tight finish.

Newly licensed trainer Neil Devaney led in his maiden winner through lesser fancied Sedulous who produced a winning on the wide outside to sail past Athena to land the spoils in the 1400 metres Commanche Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Athena and Alberetta were the fancied runners. Athena got the better of front-running Turf Magic close home but was found wanting when Sedulous unleashed a powerful run on the wide outside. Alberetta could only find the third place.

Two contestants from Delhi namely Top Brass and Black Swan were in serious betting in the 1200 metres Galilee Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35 with the latter ending up as a firm favourite close to race time. Jockey Dhanu Singh took Black Swan on a start to finish mission and the four-year-old filly skipped clear of Mulholland in the final furlong for an emphatic win. Top Brass failed to quicken under pressure and was a tame third.
