Joss records thumping victory

By: Goldie Boy   August 26 , 2017

Trainer Raunak Banerji`s 3/1 shot, Joss (Hindu Singh-up) walked away with the 1,600m Brown Wolf Handicap, the main attraction in Saturday`s race card. The victory of the five-year-old also paid rich compliments to trainer Manvendra Singh`s Theo, a powerful galloper, who, however, failed to win a Graded race in his Classic year. The afternoon also witnessed trainer Arti Doctor`s Friendship decimating the opposition to prove the point that her defeat at the hands of Surgical Strike must be taken with a pinch of salt. However, a couple of hot favourites who brought about big disappointments were Arti`s Lady Two (Alford) and Vijay Panchovilla, ridden by Akash Rajput.

Joss was positioned in a box seat as I Told You Know (app. P. Vikram), Rachmaninoff (app. Sujit Paswan) and The Straddle (Akash) made the early running. Taking over the charge of running, nearing the distance-post, from Rachmaninoff, it was smooth running for Joss , who clearly gave the indication that he was cut above the rest.

Frienship`s task was made easier by her main rival in the eight-horse line-up, Fab Bullet (Sandeep Rajput), who lost about eight lengths at the start. The winner, a Multidimensional filly, just chased the long time leader, Archivolt (Kishore Kadam), till about the distance-post, before kicking clear of the front running colt for a very facile victory.

With Singh brothers, Vijay and Bharath, having left the city for their mother`s funeral, the performance of the two stables in the six-event card, was hardly inspiring. Anyway Vijay`s Panchovilla lost a narrow battle with an un-fancied Cool Conqueror (Mohit Singh), from Jasbir Singh`s yard, in the 1,400m Goldliner Handicap. Lady Two`s apple-cart was up-turned by Bharath bolt from the blue, Rabda (Sk Israil) who decided to put his best foot forward in the 1,100m Supernova Handicap, which he won from the start.

Apprentice Vikram produced yet another inspiring horsemanship on trainer Patrick Quinn`s heavily fancied runner, Siempre Nueva, to win the 1,100m Thrifty Allan Handicap. The apprentice had a narrow measure of the last outing`s impressive winner Glorious Leaps (Alford). Inside the final 200m the 6/4 favourite, Glorious Leaps had assumed the charge of running from Vikram`s ride, who came with a second wind to spoil Aashay Doctor`s party. Scarlet Emperor was a bottle-up third in the same race.

The afternoon started with another let down by Alford who seemed to be in a hurry to win on Coley, a 5/4 favourite to win the 1,400m True Colours Handicap. Coley is known to come with a late run but the early hustle with leaders like Arion, Fly Fly and Thisyearslove, must have taken the energy out of the favourite to do nothing worthwhile when needed. Coming with a late run, trainer Sarfraz Khan`s 5/1 chance in the betting, Power Of Freedom (Afzal Khan), won the race from Fly Fly.
