Mathaiyus wins feature in record time

By: Tippu Sultan   September 10 , 2017

Pesi Shroff trained Mathaiyus who had reeled off a series of wins but at the same taking turns to win against arch rival Captain Morgan asserted his supremacy in emphatic fashion in the Gr 1 President of India Gold Cup, a terms race four-year-olds and over, by a widening margin of five lengths in a record time as well. Captain Morgan who had beaten Mathaiyus on far worse terms, was found wanting after Mathaiyus under a new pilot in Sandesh adopted a catch me if you can tactic and established an unassailable lead. Captain Morgan tired out attempting to bridge the gap and then had no legs to carry him past the post towards the closing stages of the race. He plodded home.

Sandesh took Mathaiyus on an aggressive front-running mission. Booker Jones reared up at the start and jockey Srinath took evasive action of staying put on the stands resulting in the horse jumping out without the jockey. The small field of four was thus reduced to three, effectively turning the race into a match race. Mathaiyus enjoyed his uncontested lead and went at a good clip in front which meant that Captain Morgan had to expend lot of precious energy in merely covering the gap. Mathaiyus sped away for an easy win in the end. Western Wind was faraway third. The winner clocked two minute 30.943 seconds which fractionally bettered the timing of Becket for the monsoon track.

Rahul`s Pet who was a fighting second to Denny Crane in her last outing was heavily backed to win the 1200 metres Soli and Gool Poonawalla Memorial Gold Cup, a race for horses rated 75 and above. Though Rahul`s Pet had everyone reason to be a favourite, her task was not as easy as the others indicated. Ashwa Raftar who had gone gown by a whisper in his last outing and he was very much a threat. In the event, Rahul`s Pet who shot ahead with a furlong left in the race could not break clear as Ashwa Raftar was hot on her heels and managed to surge past the front-runner in the shadow of the post to eventually win by a neck. Double Chatter necked out long-time leader Baahubali to snatch the third place.

Arjun Anne trained Destined Dynamite produced a powerful effort down the final furlong to convert what looked like a hopeless task into a dramatic win in the 1400 metres Golconda Trophy, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Breethofthesouth had shaken off That`s My Class to establish his supremacy in the final furlong but his hopes were put paid by the finishing burst of the eventual winner under a forceful ride by jockey Mukesh Kumar.

Jockey S S Tanwar managed to drive out Vijay`s Empire to prevail by a whisker over an aggressively ridden Euro Zone to win the 1800 metres Half A Crown Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Euro Zone missed a few lengths at the start but steadily bridged the gap and was a force to reckon with in the final furlong. However, the winning post came a wee bit early. Dhool Ka Pool was in the hunt all through and ended up a close third.

Satyanarayana trained Old Faithful benefitted by the good forward run and led all the way and held off the late rally of Boca Grande and Amaravati to win the 1400 metres Madanna Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 30. Leo D`Silva trained Monte Rosa edged out Ice Mummy to win lower division of the race at nourishing odds. Stablemate San Vinto who was the favourite was never well positioned to have any reasonable chance of winning.

Leo D`Silva trained Somerset looked outstanding in the 1400 metres Mr Prospector Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated up to 30. The favourite lived up to expectations by leaving the field stranded inside the final 100 metres to win by a widening margin of five lengths in the hands of jockey Sai Kiran. Zensational and Jem Star occupied the next two slots on the frame.

Deshmukh trained Shivalik Class led all the way and shaped to win the Deccan Prince Plate (Div II), a race for maiden three-year-olds but began to slacken close home. Under a vigorous ride by Mukesh Kumar, All The Best closed in with a big effort and overhauled the front-runner in the waning yards of the race to win at nourishing odds. Halo`s Princess was third.
