Sensational dead-heat for feature event

By: Tippu Sultan   September 11 , 2017

Vittal Deshmukh trained Eternal Angel and Prasad Raju`s ward Celtic Queen were involved in a sensational dead-heat in a three-horse finish of the 1100 metres Nawab Khaja Moinuddin Khan Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Eternal Angel who was at the wrong end of the field at the final turn, made amazing progress in the straight to go past the post locked together with Celtic Queen with Amazing Venus a neck behind in the third position.

Though Eternal Angel was tackling what was considered a very sharp for her, she was nevertheless backed to win based on her class. The expectation very nearly failed to come off but for dramatic turnaround in the straight. Eternal Angel looked a lost cause as she raced detached from the field, was nearly 15 lengths adrift of front-running Amazing Venus at one stage. New Zealand jockey Hannam did not panic and kept working on the horse who responded gamely while weaving her way in the middle of the track in the homestretch. Celtic Queen who got strong in the final furlong inched closer to the long-time leader Amazing Venus who had attempted start to finish tactics. Just as Celtic Queen put her in front, the finishing flourish of Eternal Angel meant that these two runners were unseparated at the finish. As expected, the season`s first dead-heat for the first place ensued. Another fancied runner Warrior Supreme was a close fourth.

Satyanarayana trained City of Pearls stood out in the 1200 metres Red Orchid Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62 after the noteworthy third in his last effort. Jockey Akshay Kumar had the favourite in a handy position till turning for home and had no problem in getting the better of front-running Perfection before the final furlong and speed away for an easy win. Khoshgel chased in vain and occupied the second position ahead of Gayle Force who ran on from behind to edge past Magical Spell to save place money.

Hilton Sequeira trained Striker was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1000 metres Deccan Prince Plate (Div I), a race for three-year-olds and the progeny of Roi Maudit readily justified the support by seizing the initiative from the word `go` and storming clear in the straight for an easy win. Handsome Boy ran on from behind with a notable effort to sail past Royal Gift to get the runner-up berth. Donald Netto trained Indian Aristocrat too won the lower division of the race without facing any threat from the opposition. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, Indian Aristocrat led merrily in front and finished more than five lengths ahead of Tough Princess and Mean Machine.

The 1000 metres Forest King Cup, a race for horses rated26 to 46, also produced an exciting finish like scurries mostly do. Arc of History showed lot of speed to show the way but closer home, was strongly challenged by Proud Warrior and Marina Del Rey. In the bobbing of heads, Proud Warrior nosed out the heavily supported horse. Marina Del Rey was third followed by Takisha in close order. Sweetie Pie ran well below expectations.

Anupam Sharma trained Symbol of Gold prevailed in the 1200 metres Rangareddy Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Symbol of Gold took over the running with two furlongs left in the race and though there was a rush of horses towards the close, she had enough cushion to pull through. Magical Skill rallied very well but was neck short at the finish. Prime Time did not quicken when the race came to the boil and finished a tame third.

Laxman Singh trained Southern Promise proved to be a damp squib in the 1400 metres Perceived Value Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. The favourite though well positioned was not able to find the extra gear and ended up a poor second. Rutilant who was leading the pack from the top of the straight, won by a widening margin of four lengths despite going wide in the final furlong. Creator was third ahead of Clarisa. The lower division of the race was claimed by long shot Supurinto from the stables of Arjun Anne. Supurinto got strong in the final furlong and though the long shot cut an erratic course in the final stages of the race, was good enough to beat favourite Far Sight by a couple of lengths. Supurinto came in the way of Far Sight but the interference made no difference to the outcome of the race and it was easy to overrule the objection.

Leo D`Silva trained Dean`s Gal proved much superior to the opposition in the 1400 metres Mr Prospector Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 30. Dione got the better of Pegasus to take the runner up berth behind the eventual winner.
