Interstellar upstages Bharath Singh’s pair

By: Goldie Boy   September 13 , 2017

Trainer Manvendra Singh`s sparingly raced filly, Interstellar (Hindu Singh-up) scored a decisive victory over Bharath Singh`s pair of Tweedle Dee (C. Alford) and Noverro (Dashrath Singh) in the 1,400m Silverina Cup, Wednesday`s feature event. The afternoon also witnessed trainer Vijay Singh recording a priced double, thanks to the visiting jockey Prashant Dhebe who is getting accustomed to RCTC`s tricky monsoon track.

In her last outing, Interstellar had scored despite wearing a dry coat. On this occasion her coat wore a shining look, not because of the approaching sunset time but for the better climatic conditions, in the last fortnight. Therefore, it hardly came as a surprise when the highly rated filly in her Classic year, produced sparkles of the past. The Top Class daughter won with something in reserve after being held back behind the early leaders, Flanker, Tweedle Dee and Noverro, till the final turn.

Bhartath, however, deserves compliment for getting the best out of his maiden colt, Simon Templar (Dashrath) -- in 1,200m Silver Bear Plate -- who was freely available in excess of 3/1 as trainer Javed Khan`s Beatles Bible cornered most of the wagering in the betting ring. Dashrath made his job simpler as he let his charge settle behind True Story in the early furlongs of the race. Templar was pushed into a two lead passing the 1,000m marker and Burden of Proof colt never looked back, with Beatles Bible being under immense pressure in the home stretch to save the second slot from Manvendra Singh`s Tiberon (Hindu).

Javed, in fact, was saved of blushes early in the day when the trainer`s another heavily backed youngster, Carpe Noctem (C. Alford) had to be withdrawn for being unruly and hurting himself, before the start of the 1,100m Winfree Handicap. The race was won by Devotion (Dhebe), Vijay`s first of the two winners. The Top Class filly was held back behind the speedy Footloose till turning for home. Taken to the front, the 6/1 chance stretched out in a champion-like manner to leave the field cold.

Dhebe, however, had to pull all aces up his sleeves to guide Vijay`s Jump And Run to victory over hot favourite Millenium Glory (app. Nikhil Naidu) in the 1,100m Aaya Tooffan Handicap. The two horses were seen going stride for stride till about 100m from home, when, Manvendra`s Midnight Magic (Hindu) also jumped into the fray. Jump And Run, the 6/1 shot, however, just about managed to scored by a head while Midnight Magic finished a further short-head behind third.

Another fight of a similar kind was witnessed between Dhebe and Alford but this time Vijay-Dhebe combinations ran short of luck as their charge, the Panchovilla – a 12/10 favourite – lost the 1,400m Prince Manoj Handicap by a similar margin, a head, to Magic In Air (Alford), from the stable of Farley Rodrigues, who saddled a winner after quite some time.

There was an ugly incident during the paddock parade, before the start of the Prince Manoj Handicap, named after a good galloper who had carried 65kg on his back to a fluent victory, about three decades ago. It was a shameful behaviour by a bad loser, who hurled a shoe at C. Alford, because the jockey had failed on a couple of favourites. The protest was in a bad taste and every sensible person condemned it. Horse racing is a sport, and those who can`t accept defeats and losses are welcomed to look for other avenues.

Coming back to the day`s races; Hartnell`s victory, in his home centre, was long overdue, after winning a race in Bangalore (summer). The Rutherford Alford-trained horse was out to gauge his staying prowess, before the Derby, and he easily had the measure of trainer James McKeown`s last outing facile winner, Everybreakingwave.

Trainer Harvinder Bath was in the news when his 16/10 favourite, Dixie Diamond (Shezad Khan) overhauled Bharath`s Fab Bullet in the 1,800m Desert Blaze Handicap. Fab Bullet tried to win the race, almost from the start but had no answer to Dixie Diamond`s challenge 300m from home.
