Aster Rose finally makes it in a thriller

By: Stay Thirsty   September 14 , 2017

Seldom has one seen the kind of sensational finish that one witnessed in the Gr 3 Maharaja`s Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Thursday`s Mysore races. Arjun Mangalorkar trained Aster Rose was widely expected to have things easy but the daughter of Multidimensional who has been a troubled by a wind problem faltered after shaping to collar the opposition. However, she still managed to carve out a neck victory in a five-horse finish with Savannah Sound, Star Nijinsky, Airco and Salazaar occupying the slots behind the winner.

Aster Rose had been running game races throughout her career though she has just wins to show. She moved up in the ratings because of consistently placing in the classics and graded races. Because she had been operated for a wind problem, there are limitations on how much such a horse can achieve because in a crunch situation, the problem of choking flares up. Aster Rose was so superior in her performing capabilities that despite the obvious problem that she was forced to overcome, she was considered invincible over the mile-long trip as indicated by the miserly odds offered on her success.

Mickey Mouse and Mogadishu raced ahead of the pack while the ones who all finished in a heap were in the rear group. Royal Sceptre jumped outwards and went across Aster Rose which perhaps prevented her from taking a forward position. The pace-setters weakened after bringing the field into view even as Aster Rose showed up on the wide outside with Savannah Sound coming into strong contention in the middle of the track. Star Nijinsky too joined issue in the final furlong along with Salazaar who came from the rear with a ground saving run along the rails while Airco showed aggression closer to the post. Aster Rose who had a wafer-thin edge carried it to the post with Savannah Sound being the surprise runner-up because the seven-year-old mare had thrived in the non-competitive environment. Star Nijinsky ran out of ground in the end like Salazaar who both should be a force to reckon with over the longer trips that they may run in the near future.

Prithviraj trained Silver Ikon recorded a smashing win in the 1200 metres Air Force Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. The speedy progeny of Green Coast had recorded a matter of fact victory in his last outing but this time out he thumped the field with a devastating performance. Hitting the front from the innermost draw, Silver Ikon enjoyed an uncontested lead and sped away beyond the reach of the rest in the homestretch to win by a widening margin of seven lengths over Gelignite and Taqdeer Ka Badshah. Surely Silver Ikon showed a quantum improvement over his previous run and considering the form that he is in, he can be backed till beaten.

Lesser fancied Dare The Don bounced back to his wonted form when he aggressively led in front and managed to scrape home from fast finishing Point and Be Bold to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Udhagamandalam Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Dare The Don looked vulnerable when Greek Goddess threw a challenge but the latter fizzled out after shaping to collar the front-runner. The late dash of Point and Be Bold spiced up the race with Dare The Don grimly holding on to the lead.

Azhar Ali trained Wind Striker who had a forward run at Bangalore during the summer season, was confidently backed to win the 1600 metres Paddock Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Buscadero and Reference were also in strong betting. Apprentice jockey Darshan confidently took Wind Striker to the front and though towards the closing stages of the race Reference moved with a flourish along the rails, Darshan did not panic and guided the fancied runner to victory. Favourite Buscadero walked out of the gates losing a couple of lengths in the bargain and came the widest in the straight to essay his challenge. Though the four-year-old gelding was gaining ground, the winning post came too soon for him.

Dheeraj Venkatswamy trained Summer Star justified the strong support received in the betting ring by getting the better of Noble Splendor in the shadow of the post to win the 1400 metres Eclipse Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest class. Noble Splendor who had the first run on his opponents fought on resolutely before going down in the end. Nyssa warmed up after the race was beyond his reach and finished third. Reverberating showed amazing improvement in form when winning the race pulling up despite an interfered passaged caused by the rider less Florencia in the lower division of the race. Ultimate Glory had the lead when Reverberating warmed up and in no time, the latter had bounced clear for a brilliant win.

M P Kamath trained Kir Royale who shot ahead in the final furlong held on to win despite veering out of a straight course from Pikachu in the 1400 metres Kumaradhara Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Pikachu came up with a late flourish on the edge of the track and missed overhauling the fancied runner by the proverbial whisker. Amazing was third.

Kudos to trainer Rakesh for the exceptional turnaround in Savannah Sound, a horse which struggled to win in class 4 in RWITC for his owners, has reached class 1, 100 + rating in Mysore and gave a fight to classic winners over a mile yesterday...Has become a bonanza to the new owners and new stable. ALMOST UPSET ASTER ROSE yesterday...

Certainly brings back memories of horse called Lion heart who achieved similar tremendous results for Trainer Sharat Kumar in Mys/ Blr once it was sold from RWITC n shifted down south for new owners...likewise competed in graded company after failing to perform in basic handicap races ...post change of center and stables .

Wonderful performance....well done to the team !!.
