Smile Stone wins Irani Cup in a thriller

By: Stay Thirsty   September 21 , 2017

Sharat Kumar trained Smile Stone wins a race every now and then though when it does so has always proved to be a wild guess because form inconsistency has been the feature of this unpredictable customer. The fact is that whenever he has won, he has done so at good odds but as a favourite he has invariably flopped. Smile Stone scraped home in the 1400 metres F K Irani Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Thursday`s Mysore races thanks to an inept ride by apprentice Nazerul Alam on Let The Lion Roar who let the eventual winner slip away.

Let The Lion Roar had the benefit of running against top quality horses albeit over longer trips. Considering the pull in weights, the progeny of Mr Mellon was strongly backed to have a bold show. Nazerul Alam had Let The Lion Roar in the rear of the group and did not work his way in the straight to get a clear run. Instead he waited till the final furlong and let the others pass him before setting his horse alight on the wide outside. Though the five-year-old finished with a big rush, Smile Stone who had come into prominence with 200 metres left in the race just about lasted out to win. With a better ride, Let The Lion Roar would have been a comfortable winner. Rafa who led the field in the final furlong, stayed on to take the third position ahead of Integrated.

Inayathulla trained James Bond was knocking on the doors of success and he looked ready to do so in the 1600 metres T Dougall Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. James Bond produced a powerful gallop down the final furlong to go storming clear of front-running Czar Rule to record an easy win. Indian Legend was third while the fancied Opening Act who stayed stuck in the rear made very little progress in the straight and eventually finished a tame fourth.

The trainer had a quick double as the well backed Indian Fury came up with a flourishing run in the homestretch to win the 1400 metres S Hajee Memorial Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Declarationoflove was done in by the draw as well as also the inability of the apprentice Nazeerul to work his way his way up from the outside draw as also the fact that he was unable to keep the horse running in a straight line. Declarationoflove ran on well towards the close to finish second best ahead of Smile of Peace. Sharat Kumar trained A Crown recorded an encore easier than his earlier win in the lower division of the race. A Crown moved up briskly approaching the final turn and took over the running inside the final two furlongs to win as he pleased. One is not sure how he can give endless runs to these horse without attracting the attention of the Stipes to look at these runs critically in the light of their subsequent performances. My Valentine was second ahead of Senator.

Neil Devaney trained I`ve Got Clout brought off a big upset in the 1400 metres K Thammanna Gowda Memorial trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Fair game who led the charge, refused to budge from position in front and battled on resolutely. I`ve Got Clout who finished with a big effort managed to overhaul the front-runner by the proverbial whisker. Favourite El Fenix was a well beaten third. The winner paid a dividend of 30 to 1 on the tote. Silver Legend who raced with the pace, disappeared without a trace in the homestretch.

Bipin Salvi trained Castlebar was another to record an upset win in the 1200 metres Civil Services Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Dreamliner showed up prominently along with Nikka inside the final 300 metres but they could not sustain their fight to the end. Castlebar came up with a powerful surge and even though the six-year-old mare faced an unexpected late rally from Tobin, she managed to scrape home. Dreamliner and Nikka were close third and fourth respectively.

The last race of the day too was one by 10 to 1 shot from trainer Santosh Rao`s stable. Stella Mari led from the straight but in the straight looked vulnerable when Wylde threw a strong challenge and drew level. However, the front-runner skipped away under pressure to win with a measure of comfort. Wylde faded out and Bestow made a late rally to take the runner-up berth.
