Handy Man justifies strong expectations in feature

By: Tippu Sultan   September 24 , 2017

Satheesh trained Handy Man readily justified the strong expectations in the 1600 metres Major General Nawab Khusru Jhung Bahadur Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 58 to 78, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races. Favourite Prospero jumped out of the gates without its pilot who was left standing at the gates. It is difficult to say whether this incident happened because of the error on the part of the starter or jockey`s overreaction is something that Stewards can decide by having a closer look. In the interest of betting public, the Stewards decided to declare Prospero as a non-starter.

Last start winner Handy Man came in for spirited support. The firm favorite for the race remained Prospero who was widely expected to complete a hat-trick. Prospero who has taken brisk starts on the last few jockeys jumped out without the jockey. Leading Legend had the lead going into the final furlong and fought a resolute battle with Top Contender. The complexion of the race totally changed when Handy Man joined issue with a flourishing run on the wide outside. Handy Man got the better of the battling duo in front with a minimum of fuss and won sparing ¾ of a length to Top Contender at the post. Leading Legend weakened to finish third.

Satyanarayana trained Pentagon brooked no opposition when recording an encore in the 1400 metres Jatprole Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Apprentice jockey Naresh had Pentagon call the shots from the start and the fancied runner got stronger in the homestretch to eventually win by a widening margin of five lengths over Ashwa Ashoka who got the better of Sweet March for the runner-up berth.

The one-sided support for Anupam Sharma trained La Romance was justified as the speedy daughter of Roi Maudit led from the start and won without coming under pressure in the 1200 metres Raja Sahib of Challapalli Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. La Romance had the race firmly in her control as she bounced clear in the straight without having to be exerted to win by a margin of over four lengths. Khan Sahib was second ahead of Top Starchy.

Donald Netto trained horses are running below expectations. Possibly the trainer must be preparing to have a big season in the winter and taking things easy during the monsoon season. White Gold was reckoned to have an excellent of winning the 1400 metres P V Raju Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46 but the grey disappointed, not showing any spark right from the start to eventually finish poorly. Satheesh trained Charming Beauty made a good rally in the final furlong to get past Wonder Star closer home to win at nourishing odds. Vijay Vidyut was third. Lesser fancied Nelly from the stables of trainer Arjun Anne won the lower division of the race quite easily. Nelly got the better of favourite Market Leader inside the final 300 metres and skipped away for an easy win over Ice Crystal who was warming up when the cause was lost. Hunter`s Pride held off Rebellion to save place money.

KV Srinivas trained Rose Petals was a fluent winner of the 1100 metres Nawab Sultan Ali Khan Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated up to 30. Rohini bolted to the front and established a big cushion in the straight but she could not keep up the momentum for long. Rose Petals improved along the rails and stormed ahead of the front-runner in the final 100 metres to win with a measure of comfort. Own Battle ran on to take the third slot.
