Happy Guy upsets in Telangana Owners Association Cup

By: Tippu Sultan   October 16 , 2017

Satheesh trained Happy Guy won the 1600 metres Telangana Owners Association Cup, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races against the run of expectations. The 15 to 1 long shot chased Mr Baahubali into the straight and quickly grabbed the lead which helped him to quell the challenge of late rallying Ashwa Raftar.

Two stablemates Western Wind and Ashwa Raftar were both in the betting considerations of the punters in what was a competitive field. Mr Baahubali went on a catch me if you can tactics, leading by more than five lengths over Happy Guy who in turn was another five lengths ahead of the rest. The fact that others conceded more than 10 lengths lead to the front-runner had a bearing on the result. Apprentice Boppanna on Happy Guy made his move approaching the final bend when he went in chase of the front-runner and got ahead in the final furlong. In the meanwhile, Ashwa Raftar had so much leeway to cover. Though the fancied runner made up the ground with a big effort, apprentice Kunal Bunde was not equal to the task as Ashwa Raftar fell short by half a length. Mr Baahubali stayed on to finish third.

Anupam Sharma trained Ashwa Bahula recorded an encore in the 1200 metres Rajah RJK Ranga Rao Zamindar of Chikkavaram Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62 despite coming back in distance. Ashwa Bahula had won over a mile on the last occasion. Ashwa was in the rear group before apprentice jockey B R Kumar quickly making the move on the wide outside and then coming widest into the straight. Ashwa Bahula then swooped on the front-runners. The fancied runner easily overtook all those in front and recorded an impressive win by a margin of two lengths. Negress Pearl rallied to stave off On The Fire and Meritocracy in a tight finish for the runner-up berth.

Faisal Hassan trained Sea Castle was ridden vigorously by jockey Akshay Kumar to get the better of Star Glow close home to land the spoils as a fancied runner in the 1100 metres Elite Zone Pate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 30. Recumbentibus flashed late to get the better of Island Pearl to save place money. Another trainee of Faisal Hassan Wood Bridge won the lower division of the race at nourishing odds from Royal Dancer and Tough Sussex. On money favourite Negress Princess made no show and was never in the hunt.

The 1100 metres Pleasure Hunt Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46 produced an edge of the seat finish. King David and Divine Heights were engaged in a stiff battle for supremacy with Supurinto making her charge on the wide outside after drifting out from a straight course. The three of them went past the post locked together. Supurinto had got the nod by a whisker ahead of King David and Divine Heights. The lower division of the race went the way of Anant Vatsalya trained Golden Joy who maintained his good form for a comfortable win. Golden Joy made her way along the rails with a strong effort to easily quell the challenge of Wild Heart and Golden Image to win the race at long odds.

Nelly had all the credentials to win the 1200 metres Tick Tock Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 but the dramatic swing in odds took everyone by surprise. Perhaps the strong support for Moonwalker could be given as the reason. In the race itself, Moonwalker raced in earnest and had the lead going into the final furlong. Nelly came through the middle and the spaces opened for the five-year-old mare to shoot through. Nelly collared the front-runner and went on to score a comfortable win. Cash For Rank edged out Naamdhari to get the third place.

The fancied Shivalik Lass ran like a dud in the 1400 metres Camino Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. It was left to Satheesh trained Surprise Party to have a bold show as the four-year-old filly managed to keep the challenge of Apowerx at bay. Texas Rodeo was third.
