Savannah Sound thunders in Dasara Sprint

By: Stay Thirsty   October 19 , 2017

Rakesh trained Savannah Sound recorded a smashing win in the Gr 3 Mysore Dasara Sprint Championship, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Thursday`s Mysore races. Savannah Sound who has been in tremendous nick, surprised even her most optimistic supporters by the decisive way she tackled Siobhan and Silver Ikon to land the spoils at nourishing odds.

The seven-year-old mare who had been a modest performer at Mumbai, thrived in Mysore and appeared a transformed this season by reeling off some impressive performances. From the 26 starts she had in her career, she had won six races but had achieved a rating of 100 by her performance against the Mysore based horses. She also did well to beat Bangalore based Integrated during the season. Those there was expectation of a good performance from Savannah Sound, very few believed that she can win in this company which had many accomplished performers in the fray. Silver Ikon and Siobhan who had a bagful of wins to their credit were the most preferred horses.

The speedy Silver Ikon led the field with Siobhan and Constantine in close attendance while the others were spaced out behind. Savannah Sound was in about the sixth or seventh position. Silver Ikon was not inclined to give up easily and held on resolutely till the final 100 metres of the race. Siobhan was taking time to warm up. In the meanwhile, Savannah Sound showed up on the wide outside and swept past the battling duo to record an easy win to provide jockey Jagadeesh with a rare graded race win. Siobhan overhauled Silver Ikon close home to grab the runner-up berth. Kingoftheworld came from a long way back to finish fourth.

Jockey Suraj Narredu rode a fine tactical race to guide Let The Lion Roar to victory in the 2000 metres Governor`s Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over. The experienced Booker Jones was widely considered to be the horse who will be hard to beat. Jockey Srinath had Booker Jones dictate the pace with Suraj preferring to chase the pace-setter instead of settling the fancied runner in the rear as was the case in the most efforts of Let The Lion Roar. The ploy worked because any jockey racing in front can always miscalculate the pace in front. Booker Jones came into the straight a couple of lengths clear of fast improving Let The Lion Roar. The latter who is blessed with a turn of foot, got the measure of the front-runner in the final furlong and sped ahead to record a fine win. Booker Jones was beaten to second position beaten because he did not have an extra gear and appeared to be one-paced despite showing no signs of tiredness. Ace Bucephalus saved place money.

Monnappa trained Haloween`s Way produced a powerful burst of speed in the final furlong to win the 1600 metres Original Vel B Ashok Kumar Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Beautiful Effect and Momotaro were disputing the issue when Haloween`s Way pounced on the field. Reanna failed to live up to expectations.

Ganapathy trained Star Coronation brought off the biggest upset of the day. The progeny of Excellent Art had no takers in the ring and ran above expectations of everyone when tackling the front-running Malawi in the final furlong and then storming clear to win the 1400 metres Yadavagiri Pate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Star Coronation was not winning out of turn as the three-year-old had finished about six lengths off Silver Ikon who competed in the highest company during the day`s action. Star Coronation had finished in fifth position when he had clashed with Malawi who was one pace ahead of him. The dividend of over 30 to 1 came about because there was no buzz about him. Alaina was third.

Pradeep Annaiah trained Sudha came up with a late flourish to down Mayweather to win the 1400 metres Triveni Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Sudha as is his her wont, was little lethargic at the start and was in the rear till approaching the final bend. Duke of Norfolk enjoyed a good lead in front with Mayweather about four to five lengths adrift. Going into the final furlong, Mayweather appeared to have the front-runner well covered but it was clear was to any one scanning the field that Sudha would be the eventual winner. The progeny of Stardan came up strong acceleration and the momentum took her past Mayweather for a well fancied win. Duke of Norfolk was third. Narayan Gowda trained Fire Rainbow had been the medium of a gamble at Bangalore and after the mandatory runs, the four-year-old filly was seen with serious intent in the lower division of the race. Fire Rainbow had the race in firm control as she stormed ahead in the final furlong and was so far ahead of the rest that the finishing effort of favourite Girl With Pearl was bound to go in vain. Country`s Bloom who raced freely in front, weakened to finish third.

Lokanath trained Cullinan won the day`s opener, the 1200 metres Lokapavani Plate, after an eternal wait which is par for the trainer. Cullinan hadn`t won for 1447 days and the seven-year-old who was taking on a poor opposition was not hard-pressed to win from Senator and Kodals Princess. Apprentice Darshan produced Cullinan in the final furlong with a well-timed run and the progeny of Juniper quickly established a winning lead.

Monnappa trained Gelignite proved too good in the 1200 metres Smt Maliniraje Prasad Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Gelignite led from the start and skipped away in the straight to win by a margin of four lengths. New World nosed out Anvil Star to grab the second place. Favourite Fjord came under pressure in the straight and gradually fell back to be a dismal last.
