Justice Angel swamps field in feature

By: Stay Thirsty   October 21 , 2017

Imtiaz Khan trained Justice Angel swamped the opposition in the 1200 metres Gool & Soli Poonawalla Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Mysore races. Justice Angel won easier than expected as the challenge from Krieger failed to materialize. Most of the races were won by horses which were strongly in the reckoning by their form and the support in the betting arena.

Justice Angel was running for the first time during the season while Krieger had the benefit of a race run. However, Krieger has been a big disappointment on the Mysore track and like last year, this year too he failed to win a race on this track. Brown Beauty led the field into the straight before jockey T S Jodha pushed Justice Angel to take over the running on the inside of Krieger. In the process, Justice Angel completely squeezed out Brown Beauty whose jockey Jagadeesh had to pull up to prevent a mishap. Justice Angel stormed clear and won by a widening margin of seven lengths. Krieger barely managed to save the runner-up berth from Super Success.

Padmanabhan trained Into The Spotlight had gone down to Emperador in his last outing and on the basis of that effort, he looked set to make amends in the 1400 metres Forester`s Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, despite the wide outside draw. Srinath did not rush Into The Spotlight to the front as he waited with the fancied runner behind the pace-setting Queenofgoodtimes before making his move before the final bend. Into The Spotlight shot into the lead on straightening for home and stretched away for a facile win by a margin of over five lengths, getting stronger at the finish indicating that he would relish trips longer with equal felicity. Sydney Harbour showed some resolution while finishing second best ahead of the battling duo of Majestic Eagle and I`ve Got Clout.

The biggest upset of the day came in the concluding race of the day, the 1600 metres Sharan Lakshmanan Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Sedulous was backed to the exclusion of the rest and she ended up as an on money favourite. The odds-on Nicaragua expanded indicating that the gelding was not ready to be in serious contention. There was significant thrust of money on Ultimate Warrior. The market expectation was that it would be a straight forward fight between these two market fancies. The race produced a shock in the form of Nanhipari winning at odds of over 40 to 1 on the tote. Nicaragua led the field into the straight before weakening. Sai Kiran at this point of time pushed Nanhipari to the front and the long shot enjoyed a good cushion over the rest. Sedulous flattered to deceive on the wide outside, showing flourish but failing to sustain it to be effective. Ultimate Warrior slipped on the inside of Nanhipari and came into strong contention. Nanhipari battled on resolutely to prevail by a short margin. Sedulous was a disappointing third. The filly played up a lot on her way to the gates and expended much of her nervous energy while being stalled as well.

Two top-ranked horses based in Mysore were in the fray for the 1600 meters Setia Teknologi Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 and confined to locally based horses. Steinlight who had made a smashing debut was the firm favourite ahead of Sadeek who was also a debutant winner. There was inspired betting close to race time on Sadeek whose odds crashed. Tigris led the field from the start with Steinlight in chase. The latter shot ahead inside the final two furlongs but could not sustain it to the post as Sadeek showed up on the wide outside in the hands of jockey Sai Kiran with a determined run and measured the favourite quite easily. Tigris battled on but lost the runner-up berth by a neck to Steinlight.

Samar Singh trained Romantic Helen led from the start and held on strongly to win the 1200 metres Bottolonda Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Flicka essayed a strong challenge but found the front-runner unrelenting. Last outing winner Unbelievable ran on to finish third. Parvati Byramji trained Surf Romance proved too good for the opposition in the lower division of the race winning by a margin of over six lengths. Perfectgoldenera was second while Star Line plodded home to save place money.

Rajesh Narredu trained Super Smart fought off a gallant battle in the final furlong with long shot Sterling Role to land the spoils in the 1400 metres Gayatri Devi Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Sterling Role led all the way and shaped to win but apprentice jockey Nazeerul Alam failed to add punch to his finish which saw the strongly ridden Super Smart pull it off. Reference who had dropped more than 25 kgs since his last run, ran too poorly and was never in contention. Perfect Legacy beat Reference to the third position.

Srinivas trained Ice Weapon was driven out for an easy win by jockey Prashanth Dhebe in the 1400 metres R M Puttanna Memorial Trophy, a race for horses in the lowest class. Ice Weapon skipped clear in the closing stages of the race to win from the favourite Alps. Giralda who was also in the betting ring, weakened at the final bend to go out of the reckoning.
