San Martino staves off Baracchus to win feature

By: Stay Thirsty   November 29 , 2017

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained San Martino successfully accomplished a start to finish mission in the 1400 metres Wynad Plate, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Wednesday`s races. San Martino who was originally based at Mumbai and last seen in action at Kolkata, hadn`t won for 277 days but made a winning appearance on the Mysore track. The Manjri Stud Farm horses had a field day winning four of the eight races that were held.

San Martino who had been showing out in the work outs and was well placed to strike against the jaded opponents. He was well supported to have a strong say at the finish. Trevor Patel took the progeny of Admiralofthefleet on a start to finish mission and the fancied runner stayed put there. He produced that bit extra when long shot Baracchus threatened to overhaul him. San Martino achieved the mission with a fair degree of comfort. Baracchus ran on well to contain the challenge of Bold Command to get the runner-up berth.

Another Mumbai import, Sherlock too asserted his supremacy in emphatic fashion in the 1600 metres Dr Ishwari G K Balakrishnan Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The Michael Eshwer trainee was supported spiritedly to have a bold show. Jockey Prashanth Dhebe took Sherlock to the front from the word `go` and the progeny of Holy Roman Emperor kicked clear of his opponents to win the race as he pleased. Momotaro was second ahead of Here`s Abbey who held off Reanna for the third place.

Neil Darashah trained Mongolian King appeared to be more forward than the rest in the 1200 metres Manasagangotri Plate, a race for two-year-olds. Suraj Narredu had Mongolian King settled in striking distance of front-running Mr Handsome till turning for home. Thereafter Mongolian King smoothly accelerated to storm clear of the front-runner for a facile win. The other winners in the fray need time to get into better shape. Full Bloom was a distance behind in third position.

Michael Eshwer trained Venus Star was a facile winner of the 1200 metres Great Cherisma Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. In the hands of jockey Prashanth Dhebe, Venus made a good rally along the rails to storm ahead in sight of the post and won comfortably from Point who flattered to deceive. Al Dorado ran on strongly from behind to snatch the third position from Bestow.

Eshwer and Dhebe completed a treble for the day when Ice Dancer gave a strong performance in the 1100 metres Big Deal Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 49. The Mumbai import fought a resolute battle with front-running Teri Adah who refused to budge from her place in front. Closer home, Ice Dancer got stronger and went ahead. Though Domita came up with a late surge, it was bound to prove futile as Ice Dancer was in the safety zone. Girinath trained Safe Bet had the right credentials to win the lower division of the race and the thrust in the betting ring was an encouraging one for those who had put faith in the four-year-old gelding to oblige. Jockey Irfan Singh kept Safe Bet in a striking position behind pace-setting Pepper King till the homestretch and thereafter got busy on the favourite to get the desired response. Safe Bet quickly established a winning lead and had no problem in crossing the winning post ahead of late-finishing Show Me What U Got. Giralda saved place money by getting the nod by a whisker over Time Always.

Bobby trained Alps stayed on resolutely after hitting the front at the top of the straight and just about managed to reach the safety of the post to win the 1400 metres Kakanakote Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 0 to 25. As Always shaped to get the better of the front-runner but apprentice jockey Manish was unable to keep the horse on a straight course as the six-year-old mare drifted out under pressure and lost her chances. Order Order flew home only to find the front-runner escape to victory. Favourite Lovely Micmel from S M Johnson`s stable had no problem in winning the lower division of the race with ease. Lovely Micmel chased Silvery Grey into the straight and quickened well to establish a winning lead in a trice. Snowy Peaks edged out High Response to get the runner-up berth.
