Temerity proves her class with yet another win

By: Frankel   December 24 , 2017

Pesi Shroff trained Temerity appreciated the step up in distance with a more convincing win in the Gr 2 Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds over, run over nine furlongs, the feature event of races held on Sunday at Mumbai. The daughter of Intense Focus had won by a whisker last time out over a mile but this time out, she led all the way and stayed put without coming under serious threat.

The field looked competitive because Temerity had won narrowly against B Fifty-Two and the opposition she was taking on was the same and on same terms. The only new entrant was Whomakestherules. Neeraj Rawal had no hesitation in taking Temerity to the front and the favourite enjoyed a healthy lead even going into the final furlong. Only Whomakestherules put a semblance of a fight by coming within reach but was unable to overhaul the front-runner. Aster Rose did not show the spark of her previous run and was a tame third ahead of B Fifty-Two who was completely off-colour compared to his brilliant show last time out. Temerity has maintained her form and fitness and since she will be taking on mostly the same kind of opposition, many more wins are in store for her in the graded races that she will run in during the season.

Another Shroff trainee, Mozart made a winning debut in the 1400 metres Kheem Singh Gold Cup, a race for two-year-olds. Oomph was the well backed horse while the better-bred ones in the fray were all at long odds. Trevor Patel who replaced the injured Sandesh in the saddle, looked confident on Oomph going into the final furlong and his tendency to wait with is going to land him in trouble sooner than later. Mozart who had some ground to cover on the front-runners, came home breathing down on the favourite. Trevor had to get into his act but since the momentum was with the one coming from behind, Mozart managed to nose out the favourite. Sullivan was third.

Trevor came up with a poor performance on Southern Storm in the 1600 metres Municipal Commissioner`s Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds where he sat unconcerned on Southern Storm in the rear position before making a gingerly effort which saw the horse cover lot of effort ground but falling short by a neck to get the runner-up position from Sagittarius. The well backed Kimberella was always alert to the task and produced a strong run in the final furlong to land the spoils. For no apparent reason Arashi got good support in the ring though the filly was incapable of justifying the pubic expectations.

Pesi Shroff trained Lincoln looked superior to the modest lot of horses in the fray in the 1000 metres Kusumben Dhirubhai Shah Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 after finishing second best over six furlongs in his last effort. Apprentice jockey Zeeshan had an arm-chair ride to victory on the favourite with Oracle proving the second best. Elysee was third.

Jockey Yash Narredu who had a brief stint at Ireland, rode a winner after a longish break by driving out Priceless Art to a narrow win over Collegium and late-rallying Adonijah in the 1400 metres S M Shah Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The trophy value of Rs one lakh was sponsored by Kaleem Shah in memory of his father S M Shah who recently passed away. Incidentally Kaleem Shah owns a significant number of horses at USA and he has been successful in winning some big races. Collegium shaped to pull it off when he shot ahead in the final furlong but Priceless Art who weaved her way through, came home with a rush and got the better of the front-runner in sight of the winning post. Trevor as usual failed to position Adonijah in an advantageous position. The progeny of Burden of Proof produced a scintillating run on the wide outside and just about missed getting the runner-up berth by a whisker. With a sense of urgency on the part of Trevor, there was a possibility of his horse winning the race.

Adhiraj Jodha trained Invictus Maneo justified the spirited support to record an encore in the 1000 metres Conrad Pereira Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Dashrath Singh brought Invictus Maneo with a well-timed run to get past the front-running Multistar for a comfortable win. El Tycoon attracted a ton of money in the betting ring but was poorly served by S G Prasad who also got into problem due to Stunner shifting out under pressure and coming in his way. El Tycoon managed to edge out Stunner for the third position.

Faisal Abbas trained Towering Storm was the betting rage though close to race time, Fantasia attracted substantial wagering in the 1600 meres Persian Prince Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Jockey Suraj Narredu who had a double for the day having earlier guided Kimberella to a resolute win, managed to keep the wayward Fantasia focussed on the job. The progeny of Midnight Interlude surged ahead with a furlong left in the race and went away for an easy win over Star Scholar. Towering Storm did not give hope in the straight and ran on to be tame third making many wonder about the reason why he was such a strong favourite in a race where none of the horses had any appreciable surface form.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Samarjeet recorded an encore by getting the better of favourite Drogo to win the day`s opener, the 2000 metres Au Panache Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Drogo meekly surrendered when Samarjeet essayed his challenge with 100 metes left in the race. Aspen necked out Harmony to get the third position while Baby Face who had gone down in a fighting finish to Samarjeet in his last outing fared poorly under Trevor who incidentally drew a blank on the day.
