Salazaar has it easy in Chamundi Million

By: Stay Thirsty   December 27 , 2017

Irfan Ghatala trained Salazaar had a weak and jaded opposition to take on in the 2000 metres Chamundi Million, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. The South India Derby winner Salazaar asserted his supremacy in the homestretch to win easily from late-rallying Azzurro and long-time pace-setter Booker Jones.

Salazaar had recently won the Golconda St Leger and had fresh legs compared to the jaded ones like Booker Jones and Azzurro who had both logged several kilometres in their long campaign. Let The Lion Roar who had a fair Mysore campaign was also another who was expected to pose a challenge. After Booker Jones led the field into the homestretch, Suraj Narredu on Salazaar made his move from about the fourth position. The progeny of Burden of Proof smoothly accelerated and bounced clear and had a commanding lead going into the final furlong. Azzurro produced a late dash which fetched the veteran campaigner the runner-up berth. Booker Jones who was running for the 41st time in his career weakened to finish third. Sagrada was fourth while Let The Lion Roar failed to roar.

C V G K Kishore trained Tremendous produced a strong gallop in the final furlong to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Dr M N Doreswamy Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Amazing Safari who led from the start with a brisk effort from the wise outside draw led all the way and shaped to pull it off as the challenge of Tremendous appeared a wee bit late. However, the favourite was able to put his neck in front in the closing strides of the race. Zidaan was third. Bobby trained Bestow got stronger with 200 metres left in the race and skipped away from the rest to land the spoils in the lower division of the race. Amaris, Venus Star and Nikka finished behind the winner in the order mentioned. Nikka who led for a long while was edged out for the third place by late-finishing Venus Star.

Michael Eshwer trained Garrison won the 1100 metres Avalanche Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds despite going over a sharp trip. Garrison took over the running from front-running Beat The Odds on turning for home and Trevor Patel had no problem in driving out the favourite to win from late-rallying Orenda. Beat The Odds stayed on to finish third. Interestingly, S P Khetan who once owned a large strong before giving up racing for more than a decade ago, was back in the fold and owned the winner in partnership with Shapoor Mistry.

Apprentice jockey Darshan drove out the fancied Ultimate Warrior to a comfortable win over favourite Cantabria in the 1400 metres Planters Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Cantabria attempted start to finish tactics but closer home, could not sustain the lead and succumbed to the challenge of Ultimate Warrior who easily overhauled the front-runner and won with a measure of comfort. Princeazeem was far away third. Srinath had to stretch himself to the full to get the favourite Astrild to stave off a strong challenge from Perfecto to land the spoils in the lower division of the race. It took a while for Astrild to get into momentum and overtake the front-runner As Good As It Gets. And by the Astrild surged ahead, Perfecto came breathing down her neck but the power-packed finish of Srinath saved the day for the favourite by a whisker.

Oceana thwarted the late bid of Durer to win the Manasagangotri Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. While overtaking the front-running favourite Flaming Spear, Oceana rolled in causing the front-runner to be checked. Sai Vamshi put an optimistic objection against Nazerul Alam who rode the winner for interference. The objection was overruled more because of the fact that the winner looked far superior and the interference did not make a material difference. Tejaswi trained Amazing Beauty was guided to victory by Prabhakaran in the lower division of the race. Amazing Beauty who had the lead going into the final furlong, had no problem in keeping the challenge of Honey Wen Money at bay. Coffee Time showed flourish at the finish, but the effort was too late to fetch other than the third position.
