David Allan excels on Mauritania in the Guineas

  January 13 , 2018

Padmanabhan trained Mauritania provided first season sire Excellent Art with his first classic success when the Poonawalla Stud Farm produce held firmly in front under a brilliant ride by jockey David Allan to thwart the bid of his opponents in the races held at Bangalore on Saturday. David who recorded his 23rd classic success in India also got the distinction of riding highest number of classics by a foreign jockey in India, bettering the record of Sandy Barclay.

The Scottish jockey who has been riding with great success for trainer Padmanabhan has the distinction of winning three Indian Derbys as well. Mauritania reversing the verdict on Tutankhamun is a good feat for both the trainer and the jockey as well. Mauritania was always a difficult horse to settle as his tearaway tactics make it hard to sustain over a mile-long trip. David did well to settle Mauritania in front and the jockey literally stole the race from the opposition by his pace judgment and perfect timing of the spurt.

Tutankhamun had always been a temperamental customer, but he appeared to have settled well in his run at Chennai Guineas. However, quite surprisingly for those who believe that winning combinations should never be changed Tutankhamun was declared to run minus the equipment he was fitted with like blinkers etc. At least this is what the official book stated about the change of equipment. The difference between Tutankhamun and Mauritania was less than two lengths and since the latter was running after a setback and was not at the peak of his fitness, the Padmanabhan ward had every reason to be considered as a horse immensely capable of upsetting the favourite. Tutankhamun was quoted at less than even money while Mauritania was at over 4/1. The rest were at longer odds.

David took Mauritania to the front and cleverly dictated the pace Automatic, Botswana Bolt, Capo De Capi, Tutankhamun following in the order mentioned. David waited with Mauritania till well into the straight and conserved the energy of the horse until such time that he thought he could scoot. Mauritania established a break of a few lengths over the rest and the progeny of Excellent Art won quite comfortably in the end and did not show signs of weakening. Automatic ran above expectations when he literally came up to the quarters of the front-runner before fizzling out. Tutankhamun who was affected by the pace and was cramped for room and missed a step passing the seven-furlong marker took time to warm up and was inclined to lug in. Though Tutankhamun covered ground, in the end, he ended up a disappointing third behind Automatic. Botswana Bolt and Capo De Capi were not far behind.

A well-placed gamble was brought off on Sharat Kumar trained Shining Magic in the 1200 metres Hoysala Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Shining Magic had run a few forward races at Mysore and had good credentials to be fancied as a strong runner in the race. The burden of being a favourite fell on Justice Angel who had recorded a runaway win in her last run. While being stalled, the jockey got kicked by Antananarivo and Suraj Narredu got off to check the damage done to his leg. However, he got up and felt good enough to fulfil his engagement but dropped out of the ride in the last race. Race-goers were upset that the horse was not withdrawn after the jockey had a traumatic blow to his leg and that the chances of the favourite were compromised by the fact that the jockey could be carrying an injury and hence incapable of riding to his full potential. The fact of the matter is that Justice Angel, after being prominent till the homestretch, slowly faded out from the scene. Mickey Mouse led the field into the final furlong and there was a cluster of horses charging home with aggressive efforts. Shining Magic who was in the rear group till turning for home, produced a scintillating effort in the hands of Hyderabad jockey Sai Kiran and grabbed the lead with a furlong left in the race. Though Antananarivo, Fair Game and Super Success charged home with powerful efforts, they had to be satisfied with the slots behind the winner as Mauritania had enough and more legs to storm past the post. Suraj would be seen in action in the Derby day races to be held at Chennai as the mishap was only a scare.

Though Malawi had let huge expectations in the past, the Sulaiman trainee nevertheless ended up being a strong favourite to win the 1200 metres Dr K T B Menon Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. In the race itself, Malawi struggled for speed and looked a beaten cause well before the final furlong as the spark in her was missing and the sharpness of the trip also having a bearing on her performance. Don`t Dilly Dally who had come in for big support, shaped to win the race but closer home, was beaten by Noahs Ark whose finishing burst fetched the desired result. Mint rallied well in the final furlong and very nearly headed the field before drifting out under pressure. Malawi ran too poorly for comfort.

The 1400 metres Ranganathittu Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35, saw betting being cornered by Shivalik Crown while there was some support for St Pauli Girl. Shivalik Crown appeared headed for victory but was surprised by the finishing brilliance of four-year-old Dazzling Fantasy who whizzed past the opponents to make her delayed debut a winning one. Shivalik Crown and St Pauli Girl occupied the second and third positions on the frame. Satish Narredu trained Dynamism won the lower division of the race at nourishing odds with a well-timed run down the final furlong which saw the four-year-old gelding assert his supremacy. Casey ran on to finish second ahead of favourite Dancing Dragon who showed no spark of brilliance to justify the strong support in the betting arena.

Prasanna Kumar trained Allsettogo justified the cramped odds quoted on her success by shooting ahead with a furlong left in the race and staying put there to deny the late-finishing Shivalik Boy a chance to overhaul the front-runner who kept his reserves right up to the finish. Perfect Prince ran on to finish third ahead of Smile of Courage.
