Greek Goddess makes amends with an easy win

By: Stay Thirsty   January 31 , 2018

Ranjeet Shinde trained Greek Goddess who had lost close home last time out, made amends with a decisive win in the 1200 metres Rajakumari Leelavathi Devi Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. It was not a bad day for the punters as horses which were in betting consideration obliged in most races.

Saladin who had run a forward race was expected to have a big say in the feature event and was accorded the status of being a principal contender. Whenever jockey Jagadeesh is in the saddle, one is not sure as to the intention of the connections as the jockey concerned has honed his skills to be adept at winning and giving quietly disguised runs. Saladin in the race did not appear to be too serious and was never in the hunt. Dare The Don led the field into the straight before Greek Goddess who was tracking the front-runner, took charge. Chisty had to merely shake the reins to get the desired response as the progeny of Canford Cliffs bounced clear to win with a measure of comfort from Flying Show who was the best of the disinterested brigade. Amazing Safari held of Class Above to save place money.

Rakesh trained Black Horse had finished second best on the last occasion but that run was not so eye-catching as to make him a short-priced favourite for the 1100 metres Ooty Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. In such circumstances, horses making their debut tend to be better and it proved so as lesser fancied Dixie Chic got strong in the final furlong and bounced clear to win from Spike. Black Horse was a tame third.

Rakesh trained Bonfire prevailed in the 1400 metres Bababudan Giri Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Bonfire had run a forward race last time out and all that she needed was a brisk start from the gates. Chisty was able to keep Bonfire in a handy position as Beyond thankful went on a start to finish mission. In the final furlong, Bonfire had no problem in asserting her supremacy. Galaxy Queen found zest late in the race and gave a spirited chase to the eventual winner but had to be satisfied with the runner-up berth by necking out Markus Sittikus who was rallying on the inside. Santosh Rao trained Kings Smile obliged a quiet touch when assuming command in the final 200 metres and staving off the challenge of Kaguya Himei and late-rallying Just By Chance. Azure Fire who led the field into the straight, weakened the moment the others challenged him in the straight.

Intrepid Warrior who had been held back for a touch, duly obliged such an expectation in the 1600 metres Hampi Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, as a well-backed favourite. Sans Frontier led from the start and had a lead of a few lengths when Intrepid Warrior began to essay his challenge in the straight. Sans Frontiers was not inclined to give up easily and stayed on stubbornly in front before Intrepid Warrior managed to surge ahead in the closing strides of the race. Gracious was third.

Ranjeet Shinde trained Country`s Sepoy scored an upset win in the 1400 metres Mangalore Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Country`s Sepoy led from the start and came under intense pressure from Show Me What U Got but the front-runner pulled out that bit extra to maintain the lead and win from late-rallying Double Trouble. Show Me What U Got weakened to finish third. Kohinoor Blitz and Eudora were locked in a stiff battle for supremacy in the lower division of the race but Mr Chang who flew home on the wide outside got the nod in a tight finish. Kohinoor Blitz nosed out Eudora to finish second best.
