Pearl City proves too good in Irani Cup

  February 2 , 2018

Prithviraj trained Pearl City proved too good for the opposition in the 1400 metres F K Irani Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. Pearl City who had been an accomplished performer showed quantum improvement from her last run to win the race in taking style from late-finishing El Fenix and Fair Game.

Pearl City was backed strongly to win the feature event as the five-year-old mare had the experience of running against some mighty opponents. Her last run was an aberration as she had reportedly suffered a cut injury during the running of the race. The eight-year-old Mickey Mouse who was running too quickly for comfort after a noteworthy second over a sprint last week, was taken to the front from Srinath soon after the jump out. Gypsy was settled in a handy second position while Suraj Narredu on Pearl City brought the mare from the wide outside draw into a handy position. El Fenix and Fair Game were in the rear bunch.

Mickey Mouse failed to sustain his challenge for long in the straight and Pearl City gradually picked up momentum to go storming clear to seal the race long way from home. El Fenix moved up strongly on the wide outside and in the act of coming into contention, squeezed Fair Game who was getting into her rhythm. Pearl City stretched away for an easy while El Fenix edged out Fair Game who was gaining ground after being momentarily inconvenienced. Arshad Alam put an objection against Jagadeesh for interference which caused him a definite runner-up position but the same did not find favour with the Stewards.

The other feature event of the day was the running of the 1200 metres Karnataka Racehorse Owners Association Million, a terms race for three-year-olds. My Lexicon who had been showing out in the workouts was enthusiastically backed to make a winning debut. Samar Singh trained Subah Ka Tara appeared to be the best of those who had the benefit of a race run. Suraj had My Lexicon race in front and Arshad Alam on Subah Ka Tara tried his best to overtake the front-runner but later decided to wait for his turn. In the meanwhile, Padmanabhan trained Salvador Dali did not show any speed, raced hesitantly in detached last position. David Allan had to work on the progeny of Excellent Art to catch up with the field. Though Salvador Dali travelled wide into the straight, the lesser fancied runner warmed up to the task under a driving finish of David and engaged Subah Ka Tara in a stiff battle for supremacy. Salvador Dali asserted his supremacy in the end. Orenda got the better of Kartoos to get the third position while My Lexicon disappeared without a trace.

Hyderabad based Sai Kiran drove out Summer Dawn to clinch the 1400 meters Chickmagalur Nirvanappa Shetty Nanjamma TMP Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50 by a whisker over Reference. With a furlong left in the race, rank outsider James Bond gave visions of a big upset but Reference and Summer Dawn who overcame a hampered run midway through the race joined issue. Summer Dawn came home with a rattle and shaped to win easily but Reference was not inclined to give up as he also battled on resolutely. The bobbing of heads went in favour of Summer Dawn. James Bond was third with an eye-catching effort. Erdemir was the betting rage in the lower division of the race and the favourite readily obliged in the hands of jockey Srinath. Erdemir got strong in the final furlong and drew clear though in the act of doing so, he slightly hampered Ninon who ran on to finish second. Raw Gold showed some flourish but failed to sustain the speed and ended up a tame third.

There were just four runners in the fray for the 1400 metres RWITC Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds. Hot N Fire who was well placed in scales should have gone to the post as a firm favourite especially after her brilliant run in the Guineas where she had finished 3.1 lengths behind Windsor Forest. However, the fact that Mudassar who rarely gets winning opportunity was in the saddle coupled with the filly`s tendency to get left at the gates perhaps was the reason why she ran at nourishing odds. Pinyada who had recorded a runaway win in the lower class was the favourite. Mudassar had Hot N Fire track pace-setting Turf Magic before skipping ahead at the top of the straight. Pinyada who was in a handy position, essayed a strong challenge but Hot N Fire was unfazed by the challenge and pulled clear to win by two lengths in the end. Turf Star ran towards the end to finish a suggestive third.

Jockey Imran Chisty was in the limelight booting home three winners, two of them coming from trainer Prasanna Kumar`s yard. Corybantic faced no resistance from her opponents as she shot into the lead with a furlong left in the race and expanded the margin to over seven lengths in the 1600 metres Hebbe Falls Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Nyssa was second. There was a cluster finish for the third place between four horses with Golden Opinion getting it at the expense of Ocean Park, Ballerophon and favourite Internal Affair.

Chisty was also astride another runaway winner in Dheeraj Venkatswamy trained Del Porto who won the 1600 metres Shravanabelagola Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35 hardly facing any worthwhile opposition. Wings of Fortune who had been waited with for a long time, was quietly fancied but found the eventual winner slipping away well before the race came to the boil. Extremelydangerous who attempted start to finish mission, weakened in the straight to take the third position.

Chisty drove out another Prasanna Kumar trainee Beyond Reach to victory in the 1200 metres Krishna Raja Sagar Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Beyond Reach shook off front-running Country`s Bloom to record an easy win. Star Line gained places along the rails to take the second position ahead of Island Pearl.
