China One causes a massive upset in feature

  February 16 , 2018

Parvati Byramji trained China One caused a big upset in the Pratap Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 45 to 65, the highest trophy event of Friday`s Bangalore races. The timings of day`s races were re-scheduled as an underground pipe had burst at the 800 metres, causing flooding at that area. Rails had to be re-positioned before the races could be started. The tightness of the track and the peculiar way in which they were placed posed problems in the sprint races where there were big fields as the positioning of horses became difficult. It perhaps had a bearing on the feature event as well.

The feature had a competitive look about it though Kvasir who had earned a stiff penalty for a runaway win was considered as capable of defying the same. A big field of 12 runners was in the fray and jockeying for positions was a difficult task as the false rails covered more than half the track and the horses had to travel wide and then duck in, with rails placed in original position in the straight.

When the horses took the final turn in the feature event, the horses were tightly grouped and in the final furlong half a dozen horses were in a line with a fighting chance. Havelock Princess had the first run on her opponents with a furlong left in the race with Roya Serenity essaying a strong challenge along with Miniver Rose. Favourite Kvasir was swiftly improving places though he had some leeway to cover on the front-runners. In the meanwhile, China One who was making a run along the rails had to be switched out wide to get a clear run even as Kvasir gathered momentum close home but he could only get the better of those in front to get the runner-up berth. China One flew on the wide outside to record a decisive win. Royal Serenity edged out Havelock Princess for the third place. China One had always proved to be unpredictable in his career and he had just two wins to his credit form 24 outings prior to this run. He has rarely obliged expectations and his surprise win fetched a whopping Rs 750 on a tenner. Jockey Irvan Singh rode the winner.

Irfan Ghatala trained Cantabria had the benefit of a good forward run at Mysore and the progeny of Western Aristocrat was quietly fancied. As Time Goes By and Setaglow were the ones who had more supporters. Apprentice jockey Nazerul Alam had Cantabria settled behind front-running Birchwood. As Time Goes By was in the third position while Setaglow was some lengths behind these horses. Cantabria essayed a strong challenge to Birchwood in the straight and got the better of the front-runner after a brief resistance and won at nourishing odds. As Time Goes By made her bid but was unable to change gears and lost even the third place in the final strides of the race to Setaglow who made a late rally to save place money.

Neil Darashah trained Mulholland who had the benefit of a good forward run, had more takers in the 1200 metres Manipal Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35 along with Alberetta. Jockey Suraj Narredu had Mulholland race prominently in front and the speedy son of Mull of Kintyre skipped clear in the straight to record a comfortable win over Allsettogo and Mischief Flyer. Apprentice jockey Shareef raced Alberetta too wide for the four-year-old filly to have any chance and the fancied runner finished a tame fifth. Irfan Ghatala trained Iris who was making her debut was backed with conviction to win the lower division of the race. Iris burst through the middle in the final furlong to win the race in the hands of jockey Anjar Alam in the manner of a better class horse. A repeat win is surely on cards for this daughter of Lord Admiral. Optimistic Approach ran on finish second ahead of Parting Shot. Fancied Music Divine packed up after leading the way into the straight the moment there was pressure from other contestants.

Samar Singh trained Subah Ka Tar had two eye-catching efforts and was unlucky to have lost the race last time out due to the inadequacies of the jockey. Now entrusted to Srinath, Subah Ka Tara looked unbeatable in the 1100 metres Man O War Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Srinath had to just do the job of guiding the horse to victory. The progeny of Juniper won by a widening margin of six lengths over Decisive. Candlelight Queen saved place money finishing far away third.

Padmanabhan trained Balian looked to have the best chance in the 1800 metres Mandya Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. David Allan settled Balian in about the third position as Saptajit took over the job of a pace-setter. David moved Balian to take charge approaching the final turn and the progeny of Arazan smoothly sailed ahead and had the race sewn up long way from home. Czar Rule, Del Porto and Fresh Start finished in close order and occupied the slots behind the winner in the order mentioned.
