Sir Cecil proves that he is in a league of his own

  July 15 , 2018

Padmanabhan trained Sir Cecil proved that he is in a league of his own when giving a drubbing to his rivals in the Gr 1 Kingfisher Ultra Derby, the star event of the Bangalore Summer Season, held on Sunday. The Dashmesh Stud Farm bred Sir Cecil had given hint of exceptional class last season and his bloodless win in the Derby served to confirm that belief.

Sir Cecil had been stretched by Star Superior when the two clashed in the Colts Championship Stakes but despite the closeness of the verdict, it was widely believed over the extended trip of a mile and quarter, Sir Cecil will stretch that winning margin. This perception was widely shared, and this was reflected in the odds offered on these two horses in what was a repeat match race. Sir Cecil was at cramped odds while Star Superior was at generous odds of over 2 to 1.

The inexperienced Darshan was astride Poseidon and the way he raced his horse in front, it looked as though he was doing the job of setting the pace for the fancied runners. Star Superior raced second with Trevor managing to keep Sir Cecil on a tight leash in the third position. Trevor made his move approaching the 800 metres marker and the progeny of Win Legend gradually began to bridge the gap. The ease with which Sir Cecil overhauled Star Superior indicated that the race was not going to be a keenly contested affair. Though Star Superior put up some resistance, Sir Cecil dismissed the challenge with disdain and stretched the lead to three lengths. It was clear that Sir Cecil was overwhelmingly superior in class and his ability to get longer trips is something that should see him win many more laurels in his career. Star Superior put up a spirited fight and his chance would come when he is not clashing with Sir Cecil in the monsoon and winter classics. Van Dyke was a faraway third.

Trainer Padmanabhan said that he was thrilled by the way Sir Cecil performed to his expectations. ``It gives tremendous thrill when you train brothers and sisters to win Derby wins. I trained Indian Derby winner Hall of Famer Indian Derby and her full brother Sir Cecil has given an indication that he can emulate his full sister. I had told Trevor to enjoy himself as I was doubly confident that my horse would deliver the goods. Trevor did a neat execution,`` Padmanabhan said.

For breeder Tegbir Brar, the result could not have been more exciting as the resident stallion of Dashmesh Stud, Win Legend has been producing classic winners with consistency. Incidentally, all the three classics of the season have been won by the progeny of Win Legend which itself speaks volumes for the influence that the son of Sunday Silence has brought on Indian breeding. Win Legend has singlehandedly helped the Dashmesh Stud Farm to bounce back to the elite league.

Chennai based leading trainer Suresh who was venturing into the tougher terrain of Bangalore perhaps for the first time, had success coming his way through Cavallo Veloce who valiantly held off the challenge of favourite Castlebridge in the prestigious Gr 2 1400 metres B T C Anniversary Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over. The race has always proved to be competitive with upsets being par for this race. The well-performed horses which are not stakes earners enjoy pull in weights. Castlebridge had to perform the difficult task of conceding weight to all his adversaries and often, it has been the undoing of these top weights.

Savannah Sound took up the job of being the pace-setter as Castlebridge and Cavallo Veloce raced in close proximity while Your Royal Majesty was some lengths adrift. Castlebridge loomed large as the horses straightened for home and even as he was trying to wrest command, Cavallo Veloce made a strong bid along the rails. After a brief duel, Cavallo Veloce who had the pull weights skipped away in the closing stages of the race to record a shock win. Your Royal Majesty ran on to take the third place ahead of the late-rallying Smilestone, the most experienced horse in the race, this being his 69th race run!

Pesi Shroff-trained Brainstorm swamped the opposition in the 1400 metres Kolkata Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Brainstorm who had a good forward run when finishing fifth to Romantic Star was available at nourishing odds as Courage who was running after a longish layoff and last start winner Automatic were the preferred horses. After Fair Game brought the field into view, Sandesh on Brainstorm made his move and the response from this got abroad gelding was swift. Brainstorm stormed clear and established a winning lead by the time the others could alert their horses to the task. Sedulous made a serious bid but fell short. Automatic was third while Courage made no show.

Padmanabhan trained Indian Pharaoh who had gone down fighting last time out went one better in the 1600 metres Mystical Million, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Pesi Shroff-trained Roberta who was making her debut was backed spiritedly to end up as a favourite. The favourite, however, was not ready to oblige such an expectation and was never in the hunt and finished a poor fourth. Indian Pharaoh who went on a start to finish mission looked vulnerable in the straight when Bradfield College essayed a strong challenge, but the front-runner dug into his reserves and pulled away to eventually win by a comfortable margin. Secretive Force ran on to finish third.

M P Mahaesh trained Good Time Indeed showed good improvement when claiming the 1400 metres Chennai Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Akshay Kumar had Good Time Indeed lead from the start and though the fancied runner cut an erratic course under pressure, he still had enough reserve to win from Noahs Ark who was slightly inconvenienced by the front-runner changing course. However, the objection by apprentice Koushik against Akshay who rode the winner was overruled. Huemac who had recorded a runaway winner flopped and finished a long way behind in the third position. Huemac has had an operation performed for a wind problem and such horses choke under pressure and thus consistency of performance is always not guaranteed. Neil Darashah trained Queen of Latifa who was in the news for all the wrong reasons, came in for one-sided betting in the lower division of the cup. The favourite was not well positioned, and she had an impossible task of covering up so much leeway that she had conceded and ended up as a poor third. Lesser fancied Haedi`s Folly who chased Stanley into the straight, stormed ahead inside the final 300 metres and recorded an emphatic win over Spirit of London.

Neil Devaney trained Export Quality had the form to win the 1200 metres Hyderabad Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Export Quality had no problem in overwhelming the challenge posed by the front-running Tokyo Rose and recorded a comfortable win in the hands of jockey Y S Srinath. Princess Rumela was third. R V Manohar trained Final Destiny won the lower division of the race with a runway from behind to down snuff out the challenge of Revan Star who was battling it out with Halfsies in front.
