Timeless obliges market flurry

By: Frankel   July 20 , 2018

Shiraz Sunderji trained Timeless obliged the market flurry by claiming the aptly named Gamble For Love Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of opening day`s races of the Pune Monsoon Racing Season on Friday. Timeless came in for inspired betting with the odds shortening dramatically close to race time and the progeny of Surf Rider readily obliged such an expectation.

Summer Rays who had a good Mumbai season and Excellent Gold were initially supported strongly to win but the sudden stream of money on Timeless had its own tale to tell. The odds on Excellent Gold drifted out which indicated that this speedy customer is still far from reaching the desired fitness and the time is not ripe. Brynhill set a fast pace with Excellent Gold and Summer Rays in close proximity while Timeless was eased in about the fourth or fifth position. Holy Smoke did not get a clear run soon after jumping out and raced in the rear group. Brynhill carried the lead midway through the straight but was soon overwhelmed by Timeless who came home with a powerful burst of speed. Timeless went ahead and won without coming under pressure. Brynhill held off Holy Smoke who overcame the sluggish start and was full of running when occupying the third place. Summer Rays packed up and performed miserably to finish in the ruck. The six-furlong race was run at a brisk pace.

It is generally believed that Narendra Lagad targets his horses to win during the Pune Season and the Mumbai season is used for bringing down some of his horses in handicap scales. As a result, the ones who would have performed last year on the Pune track tend to attract betting even if they are out for an airing or yet to reach the desired fitness. It was the case in the 1000 metres Hurricane Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Wild Fire came in for spirited betting with stablemate God`s Own also receiving support. Gold Field led well into the straight before House of Commons unleashed a powerful run and went storming ahead. Wild Fire fizzled out in the straight and it was left to stablemate God`s Own to make her bid. However, she fell short as the winning post came a trifle early. Gold Field held off a host of horses to get the third position. Interestingly, barring Jimbo, the rest of the runners clocked less than a minute for the five-furlong trip. Adhiraj Jodha trained three-year-old Colombiana Princess who was bidding for a hat-trick duly obliged in the lower division of the race with a start to finish mission. Once again Wise Child found his rhythm late and rallied strongly to take the second position. It is surprising that the trainer has kept this horse confined to five furlongs when the horse lacks the initial speed and possibly could prove more effective over an extended trip.

Dallas Todywalla trained Grey Flannel brought off a big upset in the1200 metres Golden Edition Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The favourite Dance The Dream flopped miserably and was not spotted to have any chance during the race. Grey Flannel led from the start but was strongly pressed by Astral Flash and Till End of Time close home, but the long shot held on with the flared nostril doing the trick. Asad Siddiqui trained Sassy Lass who had run in the good company came out of the maidens rank in the lower division of the race. Though she was none too well placed at the top of the straight, she came home with a powerful burst of speed and sped away from Queens Best who was just about getting the better of Bidstone Hill.

Malesh Narredu trained Enchanted had it easy in the 1000 metres Dr S R Captain Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Zervan had Enchanted lead from the threat and the supremacy of the favourite was untested as she stormed home for an easy win. Improvisso occupied the second place ahead of Baymax who necked out Chosen One to save place money.

Altaf Hussain trained Angels Harmony caused a major upset when the long shot doggedly stood her ground in the 1600 metres Severriano Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Angels Harmony looked vulnerable when favourite Arashi essayed her challenge, but the latter just packed up after shaping to collar the front-runner. One is not sure what went wrong with her, but her action definitely indicated that she lost her rhythm. Cristo Boss beat Lucky Luciano to the second spot and both these horses returned rich dividend on place betting.

Favourite Furiosa led in earnest in the Classic Talk Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30 which is the shelter for the most mediocre horses of the centre. However, Furiosa could not sustain her lead to the winning post as the Lagad trained Skysurfer proved that she is a better type of a horse with a comprehensive win. Adam`s Beginning beat Bewitched to save place money.
