Selfie Star proves too superior in Eve Champion Trophy

By: Frankel   August 11 , 2018

Dallas Todywalla trained Selfie Star who had the benefit of a good forward run won the Gr 3 2000 metres Eve Champion Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Saturday`s Pune races with surprising ease. Big B had better credentials but perhaps the lack of racing fitness could be the reason while the prolific runner lost without putting up a fight. The day`s programme was lacklustre.

B Fifty-Two was the favourite though the price offered on his success itself indicated that he may not be able to deliver the goods and that the lack of a run could work against his chances. Trevor Patel had B Fifty-Two lead the field right from the start with Selfie Star getting the pace she wanted. Approaching the final bend, Selfie Star overhauled the front-runner without any resistance from the favourite and the former, in the hands of jockey Neeraj Rawal went away for an easy win. Vulcan came with a late bid but had to settle for the third position.

Sandesh who had to sit out because of a suspension incurred at Mysore had a winner through the well-backed Shivalik Queen in the 1000 metres Proteus Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Falconette had the lead going into the final furlong but Shivalik Queen who was in the chase, got stronger and stormed ahead to record an easy win. Falconette held off the late rally of Stormy Atlantic by a nose to keep the second position.

Mansoor Shah had a well-backed winner for the same connections of Shivalik Queen in the 1200 metres The Unicorn Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 through Domination. Masterofbalantrae who led from the field looked like he would pull it off but last the race in the closing stride of the race to Domination who finished strongly to snatch the verdict in the hands of apprentice jockey Nazil. Charging Tigress too had shaped to make things hot but weakened closed home to settle for the third slot.

Quite often it is difficult to assess the plunge in class that trainer Mansoor Shah`s horses would have taken in the handicap scale as his horses tend to win after an inordinately long wait. Once they find form, it is difficult to guess how much they would move up in handicap scale. Fine Tune had won in the lowest class and then recorded an encore before finishing second in the next outing in a tight finish. Fine Tune burst out of the pack inside the final furlong and skipped clear to win the 1000 metres Midori Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Glorious Land, Malavika and Godsword disputed for the minor placings and finished in the order mentioned. Apprentice jockey P S Kaviraj showed good temperament to get the first win of his career through fancied Abraxas in the lower division of the race. Kaviraj rode with confidence while overhauling the long-time leader Julia Cesaro and then drove out the horse to reach the winning post with a fair degree of confidence. Optimum closed with a rush to take the second place ahead of Komodo Dragon.

Pesi Shroff-trained Hammersmith who had let down as a favourite at Mysore made amends winning the 1400 metres Colombiana Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 56. The front-running Golden Hind offered stiff resistance and was not inclined to give up easily. However, the perseverance of Trevor yielded positive result as closer home, the favourite got the better of the front-runner. Princess Eliza was third.

Neeraj Rawal had an armchair ride to victory on favourite Zanara in the 1800 metres An Acquired Taste Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Zanara had an uncontested lead all the way and in the straight, skipped beyond the reach of the rest. Flying Dragon rallied late but he had no hope of overhauling the favourite who was too strong for the field. Celestial Light was third.
