Phenomenal Cruise wins on the day of rank outsiders

By: Tippu Sultan   August 15 , 2018

Donald Netto trained Phenomenal Cruise was one of the handful of fancied runners to have a bold show in the Independence Day which saw rank outsiders enjoying the freedom of unshackled performance much to the shock of punters who generally chase the favourites. Phenomenal Cruise easily held of Ans Ans Ans to win the 1400 metres Independence Cup, a race for horses rated 58 to 78, the feature event of the day.

The fact that outsiders dominated day was not exactly a surprise because one could not spot ready winners as the surface form was not clear-cut in most of the races. Under such circumstances, results as the one obtained could be considered as par for such a card.

Suraj Narredu brought Phenomenal Cruise on the inner path with a flourishing run in the final furlong and the second favourite had no problem in bursting clear to win with great ease from late-rallying Ans Ans Ans. Tiger showed up briefly but did not change gears and settled for the third slot. Favourite Tootsie Roll was lost in the crowd.

The two visiting jockeys fought out for the spoils in the 1400 metres Fateh Maidan Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Malaysian jockey Jaikumar had Champion Bull make swift progress in the straight and had a lead of a couple of lengths over favourite Durango who came to challenge from way off the pace. Durango had some leeway to cover but did so under the forceful riding of New Zealand jockey Robert Hannam and got the better of the front-running Champion Bull in the waning yards of the race. Nayadeep who ducked towards the rails to make his challenge held off Vancouver to save place money.

Sequeira trained Ace Ace Ace won as a firm favourite in the first race of the day, the 1100 metres Siddipet Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Ace Ace Ace shook off front-running Palsy Walsy inside the final furlong and sped towards the post for a comfortable win. Promiseofhappiness beat His Excellency to the third spot. The lower division of the race also went the way of favourite Classic Guy from the stables of trainer Satheesh. Nakhat Singh took Classic Guy to the front from the start and the favourite stayed put there without encountering any resistance from the rest. Honest Hunter who was always positioned second retained that spot while Handsome Duo had to fight hard to beat Lockhart to clinch the third place.

Leo D`Silva trained Jumeira Express brought off the biggest of the day in the 1200 metres Sircilla Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Five horses were in a line as they charged home in the final stages of the race with Jumeira Express pulling it off by half a length. Rose Petal, Exclusive Symbol, A Powerex and New State finished behind in a line with a short head each separating them. Favourite Indian Aristocrat showed out briefly in the final furlong before fading out abruptly. The lower division of the race too went the way of long shot Royal Green who prevailed in a three-horse finish. Royal Green led from the start but closer home looked vulnerable as Be Sure and Handsome Boy produced strong finishing efforts only to find the front-runner slip away by a rapidly diminishing margin.

Ravinder Singh trained Top Sprint rounded off the day`s proceedings claiming the 1400 metres Kohir Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30 as a long shot. Top Sprint took command of the race in the final furlong and had enough cushion to reach the post safely when Carnival Express and Hammer came charging at her.
