Glyndebourne pulls it off in Chenoy Trophy

By: Frankel   September 7 , 2018

Vishal Gaikwad trained Glyndebourne readily justified the favouritism by easily claiming the 1000 metres Dinkoo N Chenoy Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Friday`s Pune races. Clymene who was a prolific performer at Mumbai obviously needed this forward effort and though she was defeated, her chance should come next time out.

The speedy customer Glyndebourne had been showing out in the workouts but because Clymene also belonged to the same connections, there could have been a niggling doubt in the minds of the punters, to begin with. But when support firmed up for Glyndebourne, the progeny of Western Aristocrat was backed with renewed vigour. Clymene led the field well into the straight before Glyndebourne steadily bridged the gap and stormed clear in the final furlong. Clymene held the second place ahead of Double Nine.

Karthik Ganapathy trained Gallant Knight continued to be a gallant loser. After a below par effort last time out, Gallant Knight once again found one better in the 1200 metres Atmosphere Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Unlike on the previous occasions, jockey Imran Khan had Gallant Knight in a handy position till turning for home and shot ahead before the final furlong and shaped like a winner. But he was surprised by the late flurry of Beshiktash who produced a stunning gallop and charged home with a powerful dash and succeeded in necking out the favourite. Triple Threat also fought for a while but had to settle for the third position.

The run benefit had sharpened up Lesrel who toyed with the opposition and whipped them to submission with an aggressive display of speed in the 1200 metres Rambus Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. The lesser fancied runner was taken to the front by jockey Akshay and the got-abroad gelding consolidated the hold over the race by steadily increasing the lead which eventually was a widening margin of seven lengths. In the fight for minor placings, Outstanding pushed My Precious to the third place. The trust on Navigator was misplaced and the favourite finished a disappointing fourth.

M P Jodha trained Adams Beginning had been hitting the board at regular intervals but was unable to break the shackles. She had not found the winning mark for over 400 days but relished the opposition in the 1200 metres Ishpingo Plate (Div I), a race for horses 4 to 30, a modest one and recorded the second win of her career from 22 outings. Adams Beginning did not have a brisk start but steadily made progress during the race and came home with a strong effort to catch up with Smart Choice in the closing moments of the race. Royal Mews necked out Good Thing to get the third place. Stablemates Diwali Lights and Bay of Love fought it out in the final furlong before the lesser fancied runner of trainer Antia prevailed in the end to claim the lower division of the race. Royston Rock got the third place ahead of longtime leader Rising Concert.

Pesi Shroff-trained Riquewihr prevailed in the 1000 metres Delhi Race Club Cup, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Trevor had Riquewihr took the second favourite on a start to finish mission and though the filly was strongly pressed by favourite Killkarry Bridge, she managed to cling on to the lead by a fast diminishing margin of a neck. Highland Express was third.
