Raw Gold upsets in Ramachandra Raj Urs Cup

  October 11 , 2018

Inayathulla trained Raw Gold brought off an upset in the 1400 metres Ramachandra Raj Urs Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the feature event of Friday`s Mysore races. Raw Gold appears to have taken a liking to the local competition as he recorded his second win of the season, having won 63 days back after a longish gap.

Idealist who had won well last time out was widely expected to produce a repeat performance. But the favourite, after being in with a chance until the final furlong, failed to produce that bit extra and faded out in the final furlong. Raw Gold who was handily placed, asserted his supremacy in the shadow of the post, bursting clear of the pack to win by a shade over a length. There was a cluster finish for the minor placings with Eternal Inspiration and Gypsy saving place money against a host of horses who were all separated by a mere neck.

Inayathulla had a double for the day as his other ward Mint just about held off Rosebrook to win the Alekona Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Mint was widely expected to have it easy on the basis of her last run but met with a strong resistance from Rosebrook. Mint asserted herself in the waning yards of the race in the hands of jockey Vivek who is rarely seen riding winners these days. Anjar Alam drove out lesser fancied Daisy Duke to a narrow win over Andermatt and favourite Lagopus in Division II of the race. Andermatt held the fort till the closing stages of the race but the outward drift hurt his chances as Daisy Duke slipped in along the inside to win by a shade less than a length. Lagopus did not get a quality ride by jockey Ryan Marshall and the horse changed courses in the straight and lost a possible winning chance.

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained three-year-old St Petersburg who was running in a mediocre set had no problem in winning the Division III of the Alekona Trophy. Jockey Ryan Marshall had the on-money favourite chase Country`s Star into the straight. The favourite assumed control in the straight and went sailing clear to win by nine lengths without facing pressure. Cullinan held off Streak Ahead to get the second position.

S M Johnson trained Classic Jewel who had recorded an impressive last time out, looked very formidable to record an encore in the 1400 metres Shivakashi Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Jockey Amyn Merchant had Classic Jewel in a handy third or fourth position till turning for home and then alerted his horse to take over. The favourite bounced clear with a minimum of fuss and won by a widening margin of eight lengths despite being eased up a long way from home. Big Time Bay was second. One of a Kind necked out Lighting Touch to get the third place.

Praveen Jesu trained Nyssa brought off the biggest upset of the day in the 1600 metres Talakadu Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. In the hands of apprentice jockey R Manjunath, Nyssa held the fort and though he looked vulnerable all the way in the straight, he just about stayed put in front to win from Love Is Life and late-finishing Golden Success. Vishal Yadav trained Rustic Sunrise slammed the field in the lower division of the race. Though the seven-year-old gelding hadn`t won for 659 days, he was backed spiritedly to win the race. Rustic Sunrise stormed ahead with a furlong left in the race and won by a widening margin of eight lengths. It was an amazing performance from a horse that had struggled all these days to win. Fiorenzo was second ahead of Ocean Park.
