Meritocracy lands spoils in feature

By: Tippu Sultan   October 15 , 2018

Satheesh trained Meritocracy benefitted by the good forward run that she had in her previous effort and recorded a resolute win in the 1400 metres G Sudhakar Reddy Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 42 to 62, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Apprentice jockey Kaushik was able to push hands and heels to get the better of front-running Meka`s and then held by a whisker the spirited late rally of Bayrd.

The jockeys were not allowed to carry whips and hence the onus was on them to push hands and heels which is a limiting factor for most jockeys as they are whip happy. Free-striding horses have an advantage in such a situation. Jockey Kuldeep Singh took favourite Rahil on a start to finish and enjoyed the foray in front till the final two furlongs. Meka`s challenged the front-runner and surged ahead. Meritocracy went in chase of the front-runner and got the better in the final furlong. However, she had to survive a scare as Bayrd charged home with a big effort only to miss the berth by a whisker. Meka`s was third. Rahil disappeared without a trace to finish off the frame.

Leo D`Silva trained Deans Gal rallied late but in time to get the better of long-time leader Samba in the closing strides of the race to win the1800 metres Top Most Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. The race had an open look about it with none inspiring confidence. Samba went on a start to finish mission and skipped clear in the final furlong to raise visions of an upset win. However, Deans Gal who was sporting blinkers for the first time began to make a strong bid picking up momentum and got the better of a tiring Samba in sight of the post. Last start winner Amaravati ran on to finish third. Kohinoor Legend who came in for support, packed up when the race came to the boil and finished in the ruck. Jayin who finished a detached last bled through both its nostrils.

Satheesh trained Once More produced a powerful effort in the final furlong to get the better of fancied Musashi and Moka who were disputing the issue in the 1400 metres Prince Regent Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. After Holy Healer led well into the straight, Musashi took over the running approaching the final furlong with Moka essaying a strong challenge. Favourite Once More who failed to get a favourable position early and was shuffled back to the rear group, had to be brought wide into the straight. Despite all these hiccups, the favourite had enough ammunition to cover up the leeway and managed to get the better of the second favourite Musashi in the shadow of the post to oblige huge expectations.

Satin Symphony`s last win was so impressive that this Laxman Singh trainee was expected to have it easy in the 1800 metres Loyal Prince Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. However, the short-priced favourite had to be fully ridden out by jockey Kuldeep Singh to nail the front-running Vijay`s Harmony at the post. Longshot Vijay`s Harmony led all the way but looked vulnerable when the favourite cruised alongside. However, Vijay`s Harmony was not inclined to give up easily as he dug into his reserves and fought on. Satin Symphony was under pressure to measure the front-runner and the win was earned after expending all that the favourite in his tank. Willow Glen ran on to finish third.

The driving finish of jockey Akshay Kumar enabled favourite Sarvatra to get the better of Digger in the 1200 metres Asaf Jah VII Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. The Hilton Sequeira trainee Sarvatra received one-sided support in the betting ring. Sweetie Pie showed up prominently on turning for home but was soon overtaken by Digger and Sarvatra who battled it out in the final furlong before the latter emerged the better of the two in the shadow of the post. Sweetie Pie held off Cymbal to save place money.

Nine to 1 shot Kohinoor Lucy from the stables of trainer C V G K Kishore managed to thwart the bid of favourite Hollister to win the 1200 metres Kamareddy Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Hollister was backed to the exclusion of the rest but took time to warm up to the task. Kohinoor Lucky who had built up a handy lead in the straight just about held on to win by a neck. Royal Faith ran on to finish third.
