Adjudicate scores a thumping win in the 1000 Guineas

By: Goldie Boy   November 24 , 2018

Trainer James McKeown`s filly, Adjudicate (David Allan-up) humbled the opposition on her to winning the Calcutta 1000 Guineas, the star attraction in Saturday`s eight-event card. The Multidimensional filly won by six lengths, displaying vast improvement since her narrow defeat at the hands of Advika (Dashrath Singh) who, however, was at a considerable weight advantage on that occasion but the later somewhat justified her form by placing a ‘nose` third, behind Exception (Hindu Singh), the stable-mate of the winner. The much touted about Punjabi Girl (Trevor Patel) finished an unimpressive fourth. The afternoon otherwise belonged to trainer Vikash Jaiswal who notched up a creditable treble.

Adjudicate, who helped McKeown win his first major Classic, was always in a box seat behind the long time leaders, Advika and Aashna. It was the later who gave the distress signal about 300m from home, prompting Alan to switch gear. The Multidimensional daughter was quick to respond as she skated into the winning lead to leave the rest in the field to fight for the minor placings.

The 1,200m Burning Fire Cup was claimed by Vikash`s Denny Crane (app. Sujit Paswan) without much of a hassle. The speedy Arazan son was sent in to the lead from the very start of the race and six-year-old delivered the goods despite shifting out, raising some hope for McKeown`s Nobu (Hindu) eying for her third straight win.

Vikash day had started with the victory of I Me N Myself, who literally gave jockey, Pradeep Chauhan, a tension free ride. Lurking in the third position behind the early leaders, Dark Angel and Snow Star, I Me N Myself pounced on the tiring lot to cruise home with the upper division of the Liberty Handicap.

Vikash`s Born To Win, however, sent the pool hunters for covers as the friendless speedster, ridden by a leap-year jockey Shaikh Israil, lasted out score over another long-priced horse, Tough Enough (app. R.S. Bhati), a Javed`s trainee, in the upper division of the 1,200m Silver Beauty Handicap.

I Me N Myself`s victory in the upper division of the 1,100m Liberty Handicap, opened doors for trainer Bharath Singh`s Viserion (Dashrath), who had had a narrow measure of the former in their last encounter. Things, however, were made difficult for the ultimate winner Viserion, a 2/1 favourite, by Javed Khan`s The Sixth Seal who not only disturbed the winning chances of the early frontrunners, Viserion, Super Chic (Afzal Khan) and Hurricane Storm (Hindu) but also nearly brought down the first two named horses. In the stewards` room, The Sixth Seal, therefore, lost the second place, and was disqualifies, for dangerous riding, while Super Chic and Hurricane Storm gained remunerative berths.

Bharath, too, notched up a popular double. His even-money favourite, Lumos (Trevor Patel) was considered home and dry but was fully tested by Vikash`s Tibidabo (A. Ashhad) in the upper division of the 1,200m Silver Beauty Handicap. Lumos had taken over the running from Vikash`s speedy Nextstar, nearing the distance-post but the three-year-old had to ward off Tibidabo`s late but strong challenge.

Trainer Manvendra Singh may have gained the stewards` room verdict, albeit for the second place, the trainer`s filly, Princess Elena (Trevor Patel) scored a clear cut victory, landing a massive gamble in the Cameron Handicap. Ridden well off the pace, Trevor coaxed the 7/4 favourite to raise a winning gallop inside the last furlong to beat the fellow-trainers Vijay`s Darsh (Neeraj) and Shafiq Khan`s Power Of Freedom (app. P. Vikram) in a close contest.

The Lady Luck finally smiled on Javed who had been loosing close contests by the dozen. Javed`s long-shot, Dancing Lord (A. Sandesh) notched up the verdict, virtually at the post, from Vijay`s quietly fancied Alyssa (Neeraj) who had build up a winning lead in the final furlong of the 1,600m Ultimara Handicap.
