La Magnifique completes a hat-trick of wins

By: Frankel   December 13 , 2018

Altamash Ahmed trained La Magnifique completed a hat-trick of wins while breaking the winning sequence of Iron Age in the 1200 metres Kailashpat Singhania Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Thursday`s Mumbai races. Iron Age had won three races in a row but faltered this time, weakening completely close home, finishing off the frame.

Iron Age had won by bigger margins and had never been tested by any other opponent. He was running in a tougher company where he could not hope to enjoy an uncontested run. La Magnifique who took a long time to bounce back to winning ways after making an impressive start to her career had struck form at Pune and was well supported to put it across Iron Age. Odessa lead the field into the straight with Iron Age in proximity while La Magnifique who was along the rails managed to squeeze out a passage to come into contention. Both La Magnifique and Iron Age fought out for the next furlong but closer home, Iron Age was perceptibly weakening. The danger for La Magnifique emanated from late-rallying Gazino and Angels Touch but the second favourite managed to cling on to the lead to prevail by a neck. Angels Touch had won three races in a row during the recent Pune season and this run was encouraging enough to brighten her prospects next time out. Excellent Gold who finished a close fourth is the one to watch when there is thrust in the betting ring.

A poor quality of races catering to the lower classes was carded for the day. Imtiaz Sait trained Tar Steel had finished a good second behind Tasawwur and that run was encouraging enough to get the four-year-old gelding the status of being a favourite to win the 2400 metres Desert Lightning Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Cavarozzi set the pace till turning for home. Tar Steel who was travelling well within himself was alerted to pick up momentum by jockey Robert Downey inside the final 400 metres. Tar Steel picked up speed and had enough legs to finish ahead of Brazos who came into strong contention after gracing the rear till the final bend and quickly gaining ground finding spaces along the inside. Gdansk was third more than five lengths adrift.

Full brother to Indian Derby winner Rochester, Vintage from the stables of Pesi Shroff was making a belated debut in the 1400 metres Dhun P Kothavala Cup, a race for maiden three-year-olds. The strong preparation was reason enough for bookmakers to deny any worthwhile odds. Vintage gave an arm-chair ride to victory for jockey Zervan as there was none in the field capable of matching strides with the favourite. Another Manjri bred horse Western Front ran on to finish second ahead of Lambretta.

M K Jadhav trained Perpetual Warning has been fancied almost every time he has run in a race including his debut effort. He was once again made a strong favourite in the 1400 metres Murioi Plate, a race for horses rated20 to 46 based on his suggestive run earlier in the season. Yet again he fell short. The Pesi Shroff-trained Barack who chased him in the final furlong, overhauled his opponent with ease to record a handsome win. Rogue One who was sluggish, to begin with, ran on to save place money.

Deepesh Narredu trained Bonafide had failed to oblige huge expectations on the last occasion due to the inadequacies of the apprentice who guided her fortunes. Now assigned to Yash Narredu, Bonafide was backed down spiritedly in the 1000 metres Beautiful Stranger Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Night Watch who hadn`t done anything significant, attracted significant betting to break the sequence of poor efforts and was a strong favourite to win the race. Bonafide raced in front from the start and was comfortably ahead of the rest all the way easily tackling the challenge of Good Thing. Night Watch who was not in a striking position, showed intent when the cause had been lost but finished strongly to take the second spot ahead of Good Thing. Narendra Lagad trained Fire Flame who was available at odds, obliged in the lower division of the race, with a start to finish mission. MacGyver, favourite Outstanding and Name of the Game finished in a cluster in the order mentioned.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Blue Bell was running in the lowest class in the 1800 metres Vesuvius Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Blue Bell`s preparation had been outstanding except the fact that she was running after a long break of 350 days. The well-bred Blue Bell was offered at odds of over even money which must be considered as a gift from the bookmakers given the imposing paddock appearance of the favourite. Jockey Leigh Roche had no problem in steering the favourite to a runaway win. Blue Bell stormed clear in the stretch after racing in a handy position. Blue Bell spared six lengths at the finish to Retained Asset and the fancied Gold Medallist. Benevolence ran too poorly for comfort.
