The Invader dominates Manjri 2000 Guineas

  December 15 , 2018

Nityanand Gangasani trained The Invader smashed the opposition in spectacular fashion to lift the Gr 2 Manjri Stud Bangalore 2000 Guineas, the second classic of the season on Saturday at Bangalore. The long shot who carried the hopes of the optimistic trainer won in a manner which was totally unexpected. The Badal Stud Farm produce surely was a revelation as the progeny of Total Gallery left the field stranded in the final furlong.

Nityanand perhaps entered his horse saying that he will accept failure as everyone fails at something but he can`t accept not trying. You can only win if you make an attempt. Very few would have shared the trainer`s optimism that his horse can make a mark against horses which had achieved better success thus far in their career. It was no surprise that The Invader went to the post at fancy odds. There was no clear-cut favourite as each of the contestants had some drawback or the other. Knotty Ash who had finished a close second in the Pune Derby, Mr Handsome who had shown remarkable improvement in his last effort and Sea Quest who was running after making a sensational debut in the summer season were reckoned to have better credentials to win the race.

The pace of the race was so frenetic that it undid the chances of a few while it came to the help of the others. Malesh Narredu trained Sea Quest who had created a new record over six furlongs in his debut win went at a scorching pace in front which was his undoing because it is difficult to sustain such speed over an extended trip of a mile. The horses which went in chase of the winner were Psychic Force and Knotty Ash who were not spotted at the busy end. The ones at the tail end shared the spoils in the end.

Sea Quest`s scorching pace also affected the chances of Mr Handsome who got left behind, unable to keep pace and brought the rear end along with New Moon. Valegro was in the midfield while The Invader headed the rear group. Rounding the final turn, Sea Quest was showing the ill-effects of going so fast in front and fell behind. Jockey Leigh Roche then had Valegro take over the running. The Pesi Shroff trainee gave hopes but once The Invader was sighted on the wide outside, it was clear that there was going to be a huge upset. The Invader pounced on Valegro and then stormed clear to win by a widening margin of four lengths. Mr Handsome who encountered a difficult passage before he got going, ran on strongly to take the second position four lengths adrift of the winner with Valegro third ahead of Air Command. The winner clocked a smart time of one minute 36.5 seconds. The Invader appears better suited for longer trips judging by this run and surely Nityanand has a good chance of hitting the jackpot. The success must come as a big boost for the fledgeling trainer.

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Malwa made an impressive debut in the 1200 metres Novice Plate, a race for two-year-olds. Malwa ended up being the favourite with odds on the ante-post favourite Roma Victor drifting out close to race time. Jersey Legend who led from the beginning had the lead approaching the final furlong but at this point, Silent Guardian showed aggression to storm clear. Malwa who was looking for a clear run was in the penultimate position when Sandesh shifted him to the wide outside. The progeny of Whatsthescript produced a scintillating burst of speed to win the race with great ease from Silent Guardian. Jersey Legend was third with Roma Victor ending up fourth. Southern Ruler went uncontrollably wide at the final bend and raced on the edge of the grass track.

Favourite Louisiana`s chances were nearly undone by the interference he met from Aeisir within the first furlong which saw the Faraz Arshad trainee fall back to the rear of the field. Minver Rose set a scorching pace and weakened in the straight. Haedi`s Folly took charge inside the final furlong but could not survive the onslaught of Louisiana who covered the leeway on the wide outside. Jockey Trevor was quick to realize that electing the inner path was fraught with danger especially because it was crowded and his tactic of giving the favourite a trouble-free passage paid ample dividends. Aeisir showed good improvement while finishing third ahead of Siyouni who came from way off the pace to be a suggestive fourth.

Neil Darashah trained Don`t Dilly Dally brought off an upset win in the 1600 metres S V Subramaniam Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. The long shot enjoyed the uncontested lead in front as well as the extended trip as he stayed put there to thwart the strong bid of favourite Nitromax to win at fancy odds. Lycurgus necked out Paradiso to save place money.

Darius Byramji trained Multifaceted was well prepared to make a winning debut in the 1200 metres Amathos Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Multifaceted was touted as a moral certainty to win the race. Touch Your Destiny had seized the initiative going into the final furlong but when the progeny of Multidimensional unleashed a powerful run, the front-runner caved in without a fight. Multifaceted appears a good type of a horse who should record an encore.

Pradeep Annaiah trained Aine who had been playing hide and seek, finally came good at nourishing odds in the 1100 metres with an aggressive effort in the final furlong which saw the four-year-old storm ahead of stablemate Moraine Gabriella and recorded an easy win. Fantastic App was third ahead of a late-rallying Hafnium.
