Set To Win swamps field in Manasa Sarovara Trophy

  December 28 , 2018

Darius Byramji trained Set To Win proved too good in the 1800 metres Manasa Sarovara Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 65, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. With the ante-post favourite King of the Wind having been withdrawn on veterinary grounds, the race was at the mercy of Set To Win who not only appreciated the step up in distance but also the modest opposition that he was asked to tackle.

Nitromax and Set To Win were fancied strongly with the support firming up for the latter close to race time. Point To Prove who is still to win a race was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Sandesh with Gusty Wind and Set To Win settled behind. Passing the halfway stage, Nitromax moved up to take the second position with Set To Win still waited with by jockey Srinath while Gusty Wind dropped back, unable to keep pace. Srinath made his move on turning for home. After a brief duel with Point To Prove, the favourite asserted his supremacy by drawing clear in the final furlong. Silver Dew came from a long way back to edge past Point To Prove to grab the second position. Point To Prove however managed to save the third position from late finishing Setaglow.

Lesser fancied Daisy Duke from the stables of trainer Irfan Ghatala gave an assertive performance in the 1200 metres G Krishnappa Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. The heavily supported Yerwazan appeared to be on course but inside the final furlong, jockey Anjar Alam angled out Daisy Duke and brought his horse into strong contention. Daisy Duke picked up great speed and though she rolled over to the rails slightly hindering the favourite, she proved too superior for her opponent. Imran Chisty tried his luck in the Stewards room by putting an objection for interference by the winner close home. The objection did not find favour with the Stewards as it was an objection which was put more in hope than with any conviction. Yerwazan, in fact, was in danger of being overhauled from the runner-up position by Alpha who finished half a length behind the runner-up. Prasanna Kumar trained Venus Bay who had found Wings of Desire too hot to handle on the last occasion but nevertheless had finished an impressive second was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the lower division of the race. Imran Chisty had the favourite track Morrane Gabriella well into the straight before setting alight Venus Bay. The favourite wasted little time in asserting her supremacy and drawing clear to record an emphatic win. Charmaine finished taking the second position while there was a cluster finish for the third position. Wonder Blaze held off Welcome Back by a whisker to save place money.

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Saint Petersburg recorded his third straight win when trouncing the opposition in the 1200 metres Mekedatu Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Though Saint Petersburg had recorded a win by a whisker over Teodoro in his last run, the quality of opposition that he was taking on was much below the one he had faced. Trevor Patel had Saint Petersburg lead all the way and the progeny of Air Strike skipped away to win the race with ease over Mansuetude. Hot N Fire who trailed the field till turning for home produced a late dash but narrowly failed to get the better of Mansuetude for the runner-up berth.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Angels Kiss recorded an encore with ease in the 1200 metres Amber Regent Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Aceros was the favourite but the heavily supported runner had nothing much to offer when challenged by Angels Kiss in the stretch. The latter stormed away to record an easy win over Constantinople. Aceros weakened to finish third. The lower division of the race was won by Neil Darashah trained Sahara who came in for sustained support in the ring to end up as a firm favourite. Sahara assumed command on turning for home and went beyond the reach of the rest to provide Ryan Marshall with a rare win. Royal Resolution found the trip sharp and finished late to take the second position. Anakin was some lengths behind the runner-up in the third position.

The support for Sharat Kumar trained Scarlett Princess in the 1400 metres Native Chieftan Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35 appeared misplaced as the favourite packed up under pressure after leading the field well into the straight. Depth Range shaped to cause a big upset but was overhauled in the final stride of the race by the late-finishing second favourite Ultimate Power. Kingofhearts also put in a late effort to be a suggestive third.
