Watchmyscript obliges expectations in CM’s Trophy

  December 29 , 2018

Irfan Ghatala trained Watchmyscript obliged expectations with an easy win over stablemate Salazaar in the 2000 metres Chief Minister`s Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. The weights were in favour of Watchmyscript and the slow pace f the race also suited the favourite who could profit from the patented late burst of speed.

Watchmyscript was backed down to strong favouritism as the only threat for her supremacy was expected to come from stablemate Salazaar who was carrying the back-breaking load. Though Salazaar was a more accomplished performer, the fact that he had to concede so much of weight to Watchmyscript who was a graded race performer was bound to prove difficult. Srinath on Kambaku set a modest pace with Salazaar a few lengths adrift followed by Fabulous and Watchmyscript. Rounding the final turn, Suraj Narredu on Salazaar made his move and the fact that the horse was lugging in also posed problems for the jockey. By the time he could get the horse going, Watchmyscript had already covered ground. Salazaar led for a brief while before being overwhelmed by Watchmyscript who stormed clear to win by more than two lengths. Salazaar was second while Kambaku managed to beat stablemate Fabulous to get the third place. The race sadly attracted only four runners and the race went through because both Irfan Ghatala and Arjun Mangalorkar put two entries each.

Trainer Rajendra Singh`s Sagrada who was involved in a cluster finish when Automatic had won the race, benefitted from that forward effort and won the 1600 metres Lalbagh Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Strangely St Pauli`s Girl ended up being the favourite though the filly had never been a model of consistency. Psychic Force who had run below potential in the Guineas was a well-backed second favourite while the rest were all available at lucrative odds. Pradeep Chouhan had Psychic Force come into strong contention in the stretch but came under immense pressure from Sagrada who overhauled the front-runner close home. Akshay Kumar timed his challenge to a nicety on the winner. Longshot Naazaan came up with a late bid but fell short by a neck. Psychic Force was third another ¾ of a length behind the runner-up.

Allsettogo from the yards of trainer Prasanna Kumar recorded an encore at lucrative odds in the 1400 metres Gustav Herman Krumbiegel Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Blue Blazer and Psychic Warrior were the preferred horses in the betting ring. Psychic Warrior had the lead going into the final furlong but could not survive the strong challenge essayed by Allsettogo who responded well to the urgings of jockey Akshay Kumar and recorded an emphatic win. Blue Blazer could only finish third. Poseidon who was running after a long lay off did not look the part and ran poorly considering the fact that the filly had performed well against accomplished performers.

Prasanna Kumar had a double for the day with Lofty Thoughts barely managing to stave off a strong challenge from long shot Optimisticapproach in the 1400 metres Mandya Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Lofty Thoughts looked like a safe bet considering the quality of win recorded by the four-year-old gelding as also the fact that the horses which had finished far behind had gone on to win their next outings. However, jockey Srinath had to drive out the short-priced horse to reach the safety of the winning post, with the threat from Optimisticapproach being an aggressive one. Lofty Thoughts reportedly came back lame. San Bernardino managed to save place money barely containing the challenge of Call Me Maybe.

Rajesh Narredu trained Star Appearance was blazing the track and was widely expected to make a winning debut with ease in the 1100 metres Infants Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds. Star Appearance shot ahead in earnest in the final furlong but had to be extended to go beyond the reach of Invicta who was gaining ground in the end. Half-brother to Desert God, Desert Emperor who was making his debut, had a good educative run when finishing third over this sharp trip.

The 1400 metres Bellary Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35, had an open look about it with several horses being considered as possible winners in the betting ring. Noble Sapphire and Prince Azeem received more support than the rest. Inside the final furlong, Prince Azeem shot ahead and shaped to win but closer home was overhauled by Noble Sapphire who then had to survive the late onslaught of Color of Gold who came from way off the pace to fall short narrowly. Indian Brahmos too was finishing on strongly and ended up fourth. Prithviraj trained Fotogenic who had no worthwhile form to her credit was backed with conviction to win the lower division of the race. Fotogenic had no problem in tackling the front-running favourite Industrialist in the stretch and stormed clear in the final furlong to win by a margin of three lengths over Zala Princess and Freestyle. Industrialist packed up after giving hopes and ended up a dismal last.

Warren Singh trained Extremelydangerous brought off a big upset in the 1600 metres Mudabidri Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. The six-year-old was winning after a gap of 770 days. Extremelydangerous shot ahead with a furlong left in the race and went beyond the reach of the rest to win by a margin of four lengths. Honey Trap was second ahead of Kings Kid. Favourite Dontbreaktherules was buried at the back.
