Lazer Beam lands an inspired touch

By: Tippu Sultan   January 6 , 2019

The activity in the bookmakers` ring often holds a mirror to the shape of things to come on the race track. Racing runs to a pattern and one can benefit immensely if one keeps a tight watch on the way betting activity takes place in the ring. Laxman Singh trained Lazer Beam was backed down from a high quote of 3 to 1 to almost even money favouritism while the odds-on favourite Long Range shot up faster than mercury does in summer! True enough, Lazer Beam had a bold show staving off the spirited bid of Nayadeep while the favourite was not in the fray right from the start.

The price drift on Long Range was surprising even as the shortening of odds on Lazer Beam. Incidentally, both these horses were last start winners. What surprised most was whether the horses too knew their tasks. Long Range walked out of the gates, the jockey was imbalanced on the horse and thereafter only a miracle could have brought Long Range into contention. Lazer Beam who shot ahead in the final furlong from a handy position had enough cushion to ward off a strong threat from Nayadeep who closed with a big rush. Classic Guy who led well into the straight stayed on to take the third position.

Sequeira trained Ace Ace Ace had recorded a smashing win last time out and he had every chance to win the 1400 metres Taramati Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. King Maker who had the services of apprentice Surya Prakash also came in for big betting to cause an upset. Surya Prakash pushed King Maker to take over the running within the first furlong and ran too freely in front for the horse to sustain the challenge right up to the post. The fancied runner weakened approaching the final furlong. Ace Ace Ace who was in the chase, easily overhauled the front-runner and held off the late challenge of Yanga. Hailstorm was third ahead of King Maker.

Satyanarayana trained Crimson Fire was backed to the exclusion of the rest and the four-year-old filly went to the post for the 1400 metres RCTC Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46 at cramped odds. The second favourite Alexander The Great had the first run on his rival taking charge in the final furlong. Jockey Naresh took a while to get a clear run on the favourite and though Crimson Fire finished on powerfully, the lead built by Alexander The Great held him in good stead as he prevailed by less than a length. This was the first of the four wins recorded by jockey Akshay Kumar. The lower division of the race also saw the same combination of Vittal Deshmukh and Akshay Kumar succeed on Evon Von Brando. Akshay Kumar pushed Evon Von Brando to take over the running from the outside draw and the second favourite stayed put there to record an easy win in the lower division of the race. Running Fire gave a chase in vain while the favourite Vashishta got going when the cause had been lost.

M F Ali Khan trained Valee Tiger had the best credentials to win the 1600 metres Hussain Sagar Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Columbus who had no worthwhile form to go by suddenly came in for big support. Apprentice jockey Boppanna bolted to the front on Columbus and he went at such a scorching pace that it was highly unlike that the horse would carry the lead even to the final furlong. Valee Tiger who was alerted to the task by Suraj Narredu in the stretch, responded well and tackled the front-runner with ease and had no problem in containing the challenge of late-finishing Dean`s Gal. Ta Ta ran on to finish third. Akshay Kumar took favourite Dancing Away on a start to finish in the lower division of the race and the favourite did not come under any pressure when checking by a margin of four lengths. Platinum Classz finished second ahead of Halo`s Princess.

Akshay Kumar rounded off the day`s proceedings with a win on favourite Balius in the concluding race of the day, the 1600 metres Common Land Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Balius was in command of the situation right from the start and finished comfortably ahead of the only challenger Nathu La. Eau Claire was third a distance behind.
