Smasher beats opposition pointless

By: Frankel   January 10 , 2019

Pesi Shroff-trained Smasher virtually had no opposition to contend with as he led from the start and eventually won by more than 10 lengths, the 2400 metres General Obaidullah Khan Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of races held at Mumbai on Thursday. The race was devoid of the contest as the other runners had too many inadequacies. Trainer Sangramsinh Joshi had a rewarding day, saddling three winners.

Smasher was with justifiable reasons installed the favourite as he had been consistent this season. Jockey Parmar had no hesitation in taking the favourite to the front. Frivolous was not too brisk at the start and ran a dispirited race. Smasher enjoyed the uncontested lead and the progeny of Multidimensional gave an arm-chair ride to victory for N S Parmar. The jockey looked back to see if anybody was within reach, but they were so far behind that the rest appeared to be running in a different race. Zanara rallied after falling back to take the second position ahead of Gold Bond while Frivolous showed no interest in the race.

Sanjay Kolse trained Ms Boss who had the benefit of a good forward run justified the strong support in the betting ring by winning the 1000 metres Bahrain Trophy, a terms race for maiden-three-year-olds, with a start to finish dash. The most impressive runner of the race was Enid Blyton who came from a long way back to edge out Oui Sauvage for the runner-up berth. Enid Blyton should surely benefit from this run and have a strong say in the next start. The Cheetah too had a good outing when finishing a close fourth.

Imtiaz Sait trained Findlerhof swamped the opposition in the 1400 metres Greater Mumbai Police Cup, a race for maiden four-year-olds. Findlerhof was a noteworthy second in her debut run despite an interfered passage. Findlerhof started off as a favourite but was displaced from that position by Pesi Shroff-trained Outrageous. Jockey Trevor Patel had Findlerhof in a handy position and he put his horse in top gear approaching the final furlong. The progeny of Phoenix Tower stormed ahead to go clear of the rest to win the race in great style. There was a cluster finish for minor placings with Articulate getting the second position ahead of Sullivan, Cormorant and Pandarosa who finished in the order mentioned.

The 1000 metres Maple Star Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, was claimed by long shot Hudson from the stables of trainer Malesh Narredu. Hudson who had a clear passage going into the final furlong established a useful cushion which held the five-year-old mare in good stead. Alpine Express was a close second ahead of favourite Epiphany. The last named could have won the race but apprentice jockey Kaviraj ran into rough weather and he had to check his horse and change course in the final furlong which surely cost him a certain race.

There were four races for the horses in the lowest category and they were won by horses which were waited with for a long time for a touch. With the Stewards of RWITC withdrawing the license granted to trainer Mansoor Shah for a series of infringements, these horses were as usual sheltered by Sangramsinh Joshi and he benefitted immensely by achieving a rare feat of saddling three winners perhaps for the first time in his career. Jockey Akshay had no problem in steering favourite Paco Azul to victory in the 1400 metres Fiddle Faddle Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Gdansk came from a long way back to be a suggestive second ahead of Ebony who led deep in the straight but packed up under pressure. Jockey Zeeshan brought Joshi trained lesser fancied runner Alsace into contention midway through the straight by overhauling long-time leader Vitesse in the lower division of the race. Alsace then surged ahead and opened a useful lead which held him in good stead. Smoky Haze warmed up too late and her powerful surge in the final furlong could only bring her tantalizingly close to the winner. Lovely Fairy who was battling it out with the eventual winner weakened to finish a close third.

Joshi trained Myrcella who had the benefit of a good forward run had it easy in the 1200 metres Rhapsidion Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Zeeshan had Myrcella chase the front-running Dance Emperor deep into the straight before asserting supremacy in the final 200 metres. Grand Architect headed Hi Ho Silver to save place money. Trainer Vijay Kasbekar led in a winner after a long wait through Felix Felicis in the lower division of the race. The long shot chased the front-runner Faberge all the way in the straight before asserting her supremacy in the final 100 metres. Faberge held off Theodor Monte to keep the second position.
