Adjudicate thrashes opposition in the Derby

By: Goldie Boy   January 13 , 2019

Trainer James McKeown`s prized possession, Adjudicate (David Allan-up), kept her date with the 2,400m Calcutta Derby Stakes, on Sunday. It will be an understatement to say that the Multidimensional-Alvarita daughter won the Derby, the 6/10 hot favourite simply mauled the opposition which was amply represented by the different parts of the country. The afternoon also witnessed a high and mighty three-year-old baby, Aquaracer (Suraj Narredu), letting down after scoring comfortable back-to-back wins. Vijay, in fact, went on to pick up four races in the nine-event card.

Outsiders, on the whole, had a field day from the very start of the afternoon`s programme and the victory of a friendless, Sereno (Dashrath Singh) brought about a fitting end when the curtain came down.

Adjudicate`s a nine-length-plus victory over trainer Pesi Shroff`s Barbaresco (Leigh Roche) silenced the Doubting Thomas`s about her stamina to last the Derby trip. Leave alone the near-distance victory, the double-Guineas – the Calcutta 1000 and the 2000 – winner was amazingly impressive in her effort when she left the opposition gasping for breath, almost at the top of the home turn. Adjudicate also provided the trainer with his first ever Derby.

Adjudicate was ridden well off the pace while Vijay Singh`s Advika (Dashrath) played the pacemaker`s role. Adjudicate now leaves for Mumbai to match strides with the likes of Sir Cecils, Star Superiors and Sacred Romans in the Indian Derby, about three weeks from now.

The accumulated statutory penalty of six-kg weighed heavy on trainer Bharath Singh`s brilliant filly, Aquaracer (Suraj) who went down meekly to Vijay`s charge Angel Grace (Sandesh) who, however, was almost equally impressive in her debut win but enjoyed 2-kg pull at the weights in the 1,200m Dashmesh Stud Alokananda Stakes.

Angel Grace led from the start and played the come-and-catch-me-if-you-can game. The strategy paid off handsomely. The Speaking of Which daughter not only upset the rhythm of the favourite, who also struggled to beat her stable-mate Fancourt (Dashrath Singh) for the second berth.

The 1,200m Pat Queen Memorial Cup, another baby race, was also claimed by Vijay`s 14/10 favourite charge, Magnificent Star (Nikhil Naidu). The Win Legend son came out of the gates like a scalded cat and kept going for a facile victory over Javed Khan`s pair of Script (C.S. Jodha) and Rush For Gold (Imran Chisty). Both runners, however, needed runs. In the same race the Bharath`s Prayer (Suraj), a 2/1 fancied runner, performed poorly.

Vijay and Sandesh also combined to win the 2,000m The Telegraph Cup. Their charge, Smith And Wesson raised a purposeful gallop in the final straight to account for Arti Doctor`s colt, Sabrejet (C. Alford) who was in full control of the race; until 100m from home.
Later in the 1,600m Bangalore Turf Club Cup, Arti`s long-shot, Sweet Music (App. R.S. Bhati) again found himself at the receiving-end when Vijay The Talisman, in the hands of jockey Neeraj Rawal, raised his performance level, to have a narrow measure of the former. It was Vijay`s other runner, Splash Proof (Nikhil Naidu) who went to the start as a 4/1 favourite but the Whatsthescript son ran short of gas inside the final furlong to place a decent third.

The western India open Class, however, weighed heavy for the local contenders, again.
It wasn`t Arti day. The Lady trainer`s best hope in the day`s card, Speed Force (app. Bhati), had failed to carry the public-purse in the lower division of the Azhar Handicap, after raising hope of a victory because of a burst blood vessel. Trainer Shafiq Khan`s Respect (Dhanu Deora) won the race.
The 1,200m Hall Of Famer Handicap was claimed by the Mumbai migrant Flag Flying, ridden by Roche, who sent the six-year-old into the lead from flag fall and scored with a measure of ease over McKeown`s Nobu (app. P. Vikram).

The day`s opener, the upper division of the Azhar Handicap had given ample indications of the afternoon`s trend. Trainer Aashay Doctor`s friendless runner, Onederboy (Ranidan Singh) apparently grew wing on the Derby day after his listless half-a-dozen runs. The Raverl Son was slow at the start and yet scored an easy victory.

The outcome of the 1,100m Ashutosh Gowariker Cup, the concluding race, was no different. Trainer Bharath Singh`s Sereno also raised his performance level to win from trainer Javed Khan`s fancied runner Malana (Imran Chisty) and the long-time leader, Born To Win (app. Tajeshwar). The heavily fancied Shyam Habbu`s charge, Nembe Creek (Suraj), also a western India migrant, placed fourth.
