HRC Stewards set a new precedent

By: Tippu Sultan   January 14 , 2019

Vittal Deshmukh trained Sitara annexed the Gr 2 Byerly Turk Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Monday`s races held at Malakpet. The reins of the Roll Call snapped following malfunctioning of the equipment on the horse and jockey Sandesh pulled up the horse as he was unable to ride the horse in such a scenario. The Stewards ordered an enquiry into the running of the race and strangely decided to declare Roll Call as a non-starter, setting a new precedent which can cause problems to the authorities in the future.

There have been changes in the way the sport has been administered in recent times, with international precedents resulting in some changes especially about one or two horses suffering due to technical malfunctioning at the time of jump out. The earlier practice of declaring the race null and void was given up and only those horses which were affected were selectively declared as non-starters for the purpose of betting so that money bet on them was refunded to the punters. This measure took care of the interests of racehorse owners, professionals and punters as well. However, in the present instance, the equipment snapped during the race and as such, it must be considered as an accidental happening which is part and parcel of racing. By declaring the horse as a non-starter, there could be demand in future for similar concessions in case the saddle slipped during a race or a horse dropped its jockey, or a horse reared up at the time the start was given.

Be that as it may, Sitara who had made a smashing debut was backed with conviction to have a decisive say. Chennai challenger Butterfly came in for sustained betting to end up as the second favourite. Jockey Suraj Narredu took Sitara on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Arazan kept the rest at a safe distance and established a winning lead in the final furlong. Cape Kidnappers rallied late from way back to nose out Swansea to take the runner-up berth. Butterfly packed up without a trace and finished in the ruck.

Laxman Singh trained Aragonda Princess pulled off a thrilling win over Mr Baahubali in the 1200 metres Raja Sitaram of Bhupal of Domakonda Samsthanam Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 58 to 78. Mr Baahubali who was running over long distances in patented front-running style appeared to have been well prepared to have a bold show over a six-furlong trip which had seen perform impressively in his formative years. The fact that he was being ridden by five-kg claimer Surya Prakash ensured that he went to the post as a favourite. Aragonda Princess attracted some smart money. Surya Prakash did a good job of not rushing Mr Baahubali to the front and hit the front within the first furlong. Mr Baahubali had a very useful lead going into the final furlong when Aragonda Princess made her bid from way off the pace. Aragonda Princess, in the hands of jockey S S Tanwar, covered ground resolutely and managed to overhaul the front-runner in the waning yards of the race. Indian Dreams too finished powerfully to be a close third. Trainer Vittal Deshmukh who lost out on Mr Baahubali, however, led in the winner of the lower division of the race where the lesser fancied New Port held off the late challenge of favourite Palace On Wheels. New Port came into strong prominence inside the final 350 metres and spurted ahead to open a good lead which held the progeny of Phoenix Tower in good stead. Palace On Wheels finished with a rush but missed the berth by a whisker. Champion Bull ran on well towards the close to take the third position.

Hilton Sequeira trained Esteva was strongly backed to make a winning debut in the 1200 metes Aristocrat Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Mehrzad went at a scorching pace in front with Blazer a few lengths behind while the favourite had many lengths to cover going into the final furlong. However, the front-runner began to falter close home and Esteva who produced a strong burst of speed easily sped past the front-runner to record an impressive win. Blazer edged out Mehrzad in the final stride to grab the runner-up berth.

Both the divisions of the Storm Trooper Plate, a race run over seven furlongs for horses rated up to 30, saw upsets. Satyanarayana trained All Star General led going into the final furlong and held off the strong challenge of favourite Symbol of Star`s for whom a maiden victory has eluded thus far in 23 outings. Semira nosed out Rose Petal to save place money. The lower division of the Storm Trooper Plate looked a minefield and in the fitness of things, two horses which were not in serious betting got down to fight the finish. In the bobbing of heads, long shot Invasion nosed out King David to land the spoils. Gangadhar who came in for some noticeable betting to break the winless sequence could only manage to save place money at the expense of favourite Sisco.

The 1200 metres Sunny Blossom Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62 saw a big upset with favourite Dancing Moon who came in for spirited betting bursting his blood vessels and finishing down the field. Ravinder Singh trained Royal Dynamite shaped to win the race when he shot into the lead in the final furlong but was beaten with a measure of comfort by stablemate Royal Treasure who showed good aggression in the final furlong in the hands of five-kg claimer Gaurav Singh. Astra was a head behind the runner-up.

C V G K Kishore trained Lockhart produced a fluent gallop in the closing stages of the race to get the better of long-time leader Darshish to clinch the 1400 metres Roses In Bloom Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Darshish cut an erratic course in the final furlong which hurt his chances and had an intimidating influence on favourite His Excellency whose jockey was caught in two minds whether to shift in or out.
