Sweet Music wins feature on a day of long knives

By: Goldie Boy   January 29 , 2019

On an afternoon ruled by long priced winners, Arti Doctor-trained 6/1 shot, Sweet Music (app. R.S. Bhati-up) scored a decisive victory over trainer Bharath Singh`s fancied runner, Rufus (Dashrath Singh) in the 1,400m RWITC Cup, Tuesday`s feature event. The afternoon also witnessed trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s Knight of Thunder (P.S. Chauhan) winning the David Jacob Cup and Harvinder Singh Bath`s Expensive Affair (Shezad Khan) claiming the King Wajid Ali Shah of Audh Cup. Competition during the afternoon was very tough and close finishes were aplenty.

Sweet Music`s last run against The Talisman was impressive, yet the Dean`s Kitten son hardly received the required support in the betting as trainer Jaiswal`s Mygrator (Chauhan) went to the start as a 7/4 favourite. Mygrator, however, was never in the race while his stable-mates and speedier lot, like Amorous White (app. Aditya Jaiswal), Exodus (app. Sujit Paswan), One Man Army (Vinay Jaiswal), along with Flying Flag (app. Vikram), dominated proceeding for the major part of the journey. Sweet Music was ridden in his usual – off the pace, close to the rails but in the close proximity of Rufus who galloped on the wide out.

Sweet Music and Rufus, made gradual progress 300m from the post as the front runners ran short of gas. Sweet Music`s superior acceleration inside the final furlong, however, settled the issue, despite his weight disadvantage. Dashrath, in fact, could have placed much closer to the winner, had he not kept his charge six horses wide throughout the journey.

Knight of Thunder, on the other hand, won a thriller, in a four-horse blanket finish. It was anybody`s race in the last furlong with Vijay Singh`s pair of Adhira (A. Sandesh) and Valeria (Nikhil Naidu) having to struggle to overtake the long time leader, Rush For Glory (Hindu Singh), in the last 150m. It was at this juncture that the race run benefitted Knight of Thunder walked on the scene with thundering strides from way back of the field to steal the thunder.

In fact, the afternoon was the handicapper`s delight as three more races, including the King Wajid Ali Shah of Oudh Cup, also witnessed an equally tight-finish. The verdict in the Audh Cup, went in favour of Expensive Affair. The Harvinder Bath`s horse had been knocking at the door for long, therefore, his victory hardly came as a surprise.

In the same race, the last time out easy winner, Onederboy (C. Alford) was ridden from the front but lost in a close tussle. The Ravel son was slowly out and had gone all over the field to score easily in his previous outing.

Trainer Shyam Habbu`s 7/1 shot, Bidstone Hill (app. Paswan), too, adopted the pillar-to-post tactics to last out to hold the advantage over the 15/4 fancied runner, Sereno (Dashrath) in the 1,100m Bountiful Treasure Handicap. The other three horses involved in the five-horse desperately close finish were Rising From Ashes (Hindu), the 6/4 favourite, Enchanted (Sandesh) and Lady Two (Bhati).

The concluding event, the 2,000m Moon Emperor Handicap, too, had its share of excitement when Bharath`s Lochinvar (Dashrath) finally managed to get the winning verdict in his favour from Smith And Wesson (Sandesh), and Far Sight (Afzal Khan), in another three-hose tight finish. The winner was always up with the 5/2 favourite, Sabrejet (C. Alford), from the start of the race and had taken over the running about 150m from home from the weakening leader.

Trainer Shafiq Khan deserves compliment for transforming a mediocre six-year-old horse, Mustang (app. Rupal Singh), into a champion galloper. The horse notched up his third straight win on his way to annexing the 1,100m Flying Saucer Handicap.

The afternoon started with trainer Jasbir Singh`s Artiste Royal (Afzal Khan) landing a big gamble in the 1,600m Spats Colombo Handicap. Backed from 10`s down to 4/1. The winner waited behind the long time leaders – City Heights (app. P. Tejeshwar) and Romantic Zeal (Alford) till about a furlong from home, before making his winning run.
