Capricious takes all by surprise in Mayor`s Cup

By: Goldie Boy   February 16 , 2019

Trainers Vikash Jaiswal and James McKeown were in the limelight again when the former`s fancied 6/1 shot Capricious, (Vinay Jaiswal-up), scored a thrilling victory over Arti Doctor`s equally fancied runner, Multivalue (Neeraj Rawal) to win the 1,400m Mayor`s cup on Saturday. McKeown, on the other hand, exercised a total control over the opposition in the 1,400m B.K. Poddar Cup as the trainer`s two wards Trafalgar (Hindu Singh) and Manzoni (A. Sandesh) proved way superior for the Lady trainer`s solidly wagered favourite, Atom (Neeraj).

Vikash has habit of taking the opposition by a surprise but the last run of Capricious, when ridden by apprentice Hasib Alam, had signalled the stable`s intentions. However, trainer Vijay Singh`s He Calls The Shot (Suraj Narredu) was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the field and the Multidimensional son went to the start as a 2/1 firm favourite. In fact the three named horses were ridden well off the pace before they were brought into the fighting line, in the final 300 metres of the race. However, the winning lead build-up by Capricious, below the final furlong, proved decisive for Gusto son.

McKeown`s pair of Manzoni (Sandesh) and Trafalgar (Hindu Singh) were quietly fancied runners in the B.K. Poddar Cup, by those close to the stable but Arti`s Atom (Neeraj) was the rage of backers, particularly those who had witnessed the fighting spirit of the Arazan colt in his maiden run against After Shock. The fact that After Shock went on to place a good third in the Million, the case of Atom had become that much stronger.

Trafalgar, however, spoiled all calculations. Held backed in the mid-division in the early half, the winner, a Western Aristocrat colt, covered much ground nearing the home turn to be fourth. He joined the issue with his stablemate, Manzoni, around the distance post, to score comfortably. Atom, who was also given a waiting race was poor third, exactly five lengths behind the second place Manzoni.

The 1,600m INS Hooghly Cup and 1,100m Navy Cup, were re-named as the Royal Challenge Cup and Mica Empress Cup respectively, in view of the state mourning by the Defence Forces for the Phulwara killings.

The Royal Challenge Cup was a mere formality for Vijay`s Arjuna (Suraj Narredu), who was backed from 11/2 down to 5/2. The sparingly raced colt made every post of the journey a winning one to beat an unfancied runner, Stellanova (Nikhil Naidu) by 5 long lengths. The Mica Empress Cup, to was claimed by a heavily fancied Shyam Habbu`s charge, Stallone (Shezad Khan) who was ridden off the pace to easily beat Arti`s Lady Two (Neeraj) and Aashay Doctor`s Bergamot (app. R.S. Bhati).

The victory of Mr Fogg`s (app. P. Tejeshwar) was, however, some solace for Arti`s stable, in the 1,200m Appeaser Handicap. The apprentice held back the 4/1 shot behind the early leaders, Invincible Army (Anil Baandal), Scarlet Emperor (app. Aditya Jaiswal) and Romantic Lass (app. P. Vikram). Mr Hogg`s scored after a prolonged fight with the last named runner.

The two divisions of the day`s openers, the 1,200m Cupid Handicap, were keenly contested. The upper division witnessed Vikash`s heavily fancied top-weighted runner, Dancing Prince (app. Sujit Paswan) delivering the goods after drifting out badly in the home straight while the lower division was picked up by Harvinder Bath`s less-fancied runner, Mrs Willy Nilly (C. Alford). Bath`s unfancied runner, Dixie Diamond (app. Rupal Singh) also brought the curtain down with an easy victory in the 2,000m Aemilia Handicap.
