Vancouver wins feature when a late dash

By: Tippu Sultan   February 17 , 2019

The most thrilling finish of Sunday`s races at Hyderabad on Sunday was witnessed in the 1400 metres Dr M A M Ramaswamy Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 42 to 62, the feature event of the day. The race saw a dramatic finish with Vancouver who did not appear to be in the scheme of things inside the final furlong coming up with a late dash to snatch the verdict in the closing stride of the race. Jockey Akshay Kumar once again delighted the punters booting home four winners.

Last start winner NRI Symbol opened as an on-money favourite but the odds expanded rapidly by race time. It was difficult to understand how NRI Symbol could have opened as a short-priced favourite when the race had a very competitive look about it. Symbol of Gold and Thundering were ahead of the pack till turning for home. NRI was handily placed to make his charge but when doing so was hampered by Humaaghar who then bounced ahead. Rutilant came up with a late bid but the front-runner appeared to have the others well covered and jockey Rafique even had a peep over his shoulder only to find that he was in danger of being toppled. The danger came from the unexpected source with Vancouver flying on the wide outside and prevailing by a whisker. Rutilant was third ahead of NRI Symbol. Almost eight horses finished in close order.

The lower division of the M A M Ramaswamy Cup was easily claimed by the strongly fancied Miracle King from the stables of trainer Sequeira. Jockey Akshay Kumar had Miracle King track Et Voici into the straight before pushing the fancied runner to take charge. Miracle King quickened well to go storming clear and had enough reserves when George Cross came charging at him. Marina Del Rey ran from way off the pace to get the third position.

Donald Netto trained Havelock Cruise who had a noteworthy forward run in his debut run looked to have an excellent chance to win the 1400 metres Pleasure Hunt Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. This was also reflected in the way he was backed down to strong favouritism. Jockey Kiran Netto struggled to keep the favourite on an even keel while overtaking the front-runners in the final furlong but managed to do so after considerable difficulty. Once Havelock Cruise got going, he stormed clear to win by a widening margin of three lengths. There was a cluster finish for minor placings with Red Snapper edging out Red River and Star Racer to snatch the second place. Akshay Kumar drove out long shot Gusty Look to a narrow win over favourite Swansea in the 1400 metres Pleasure Hunt Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Gusty Look went on a start to finish mission and though challenged early by Augenstern in the stretch, the Hilton Sequeira trainee was unrelenting and kicked clear. Favourite Swansea produced a strong effort under a strong drive by Kuldeep Singh but was unable to cover the leeway and fell short by ΒΌ of a length. Shivalik Valley ran on well to take the third position.

Last start winner Balius was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1800 meters Seven Hills Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Balius chased Willow Glen well into the straight before asserting her supremacy in the final furlong. Though the filly was inclined to run out, jockey Akshay Kumar had her under control and the favourite skipped away in the end to record an emphatic win. Royal Style came up with a late bid but found the front-runner too good for comfort. Nathu La was third ahead of Yogastha whose late rally just about failed to enable the four-year-old filly to save place money by a whisker.

Akshay Kumar and Sequeira combined to get their third win of the day through Ace Ace Ace who swamped the opposition with ease in the MCME Rolling Trophy, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, Akshay Kumar had the favourite relaxed in about the fourth or fifth position till turning for home as Once More set a fast pace only to weaken in the straight to go out of the reckoning. Ace Ace Ace covered the leeway on turning for home with a minimum of fuss and had the race sewn up a long way from home. Meka`s ran on to take the second position ahead of Lockhart.

Laxman Singh trained Admiral Birju was backed as a strong favourite to win the 1600 metres Squanderer Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 30. Symbol of Star`s led the field at the final bend and had a good break going into the final furlong when the favourite began to make his move from way off the pace. Admiral Birju made up the ground with great alacrity and went sailing clear in the final stages of the race to record an easy win. Mossad was third. Faiyaz Ali Khan trained Semira trounced the opposition in the lower division of the Squanderer Plate. New Comer led from the start and managed to stay in front till midway through the stretch. Semira who was in the chase responded well to the urgings of apprentice jockey Afroz Khan and stormed clear in the final furlong to win by a big margin of more than four lengths over New Comer who stayed on to take the second position. Eau Claire who was backed as a strong favourite was stranded way behind and eventually finished a poor third.
