War Hammer slams opposition in a splendid fashion

  February 22 , 2019

Prasanna Kumar trained War Hammer confirmed the good impression he had created in his debut run with yet another emphatic win in the Gr 3 Bangalore Juvenile Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. The progeny of Ari Strike simply left the field standing in the final furlong to win the race he pleased once again underlining the fact that he is a youngster to watch during the summer season.

War Hammer stood tall among those contesting for the richly endowed race and the short price quoted on him was not a surprise. Star Appearance who had won on debut but was running after a longish break led the field from the start followed by Kirkwood, Desert Rose, Star Cavalry and War Hammer. Star Appearance led the field into the straight but approaching the final furlong, War Hammer overwhelmed the front-runner with a powerful effort which saw the favourite go storming clear for a win by a widening margin of six lengths. Star Appearance stayed put in the second position while Kirkwood managed to thwart the bid of Star Cavalry to get the third position. Desert Rose faded out to finish last of five runners.

Ganapathy trained Star Carnation who had been running fair races finally found the winning mark after 391 days by winning the 1400 metres Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 75 and above. Saint Petersburg who had recorded a hat-trick and then faltered in the highest class, was nevertheless made the favourite and led in earnest but was unable to sustain the lead in the stretch. Star Carnation who was kept a handy third till entering the straight pounced on the front-runner with a strong effort and stormed clear in the final furlong for an easy win. Fire Glow rallied along the rails to get the second position ahead of the late-rallying Sagrada. Mansuetude was fourth while Saint Petersburg finished a poor tenth.

Kishan Thomas trained Blue Blazer won the 1200 metres Galloping Acres Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 45 to 65 at long odds. Dominic trained Castaway received solid support in the betting ring, but the favourite flopped miserably unable to stay in touch with the pace and was a beaten cause well before the race came to the boil. Blue Blazer who made rapid strides on entering the straight had the field covered in the final furlong and spurted away to win by a margin of over three lengths. Minver Rose was second ahead of Madame Sultana.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Impavid made a smashing debut in the 1200 metres Black Caviar Stakes, a terms race for maiden three-year-olds. Jockey Sandesh had Impavid lead from the start and the progeny of Air Support left the field way behind as he went on to win by a widening margin of eight lengths over Oh Pada and joint-favourite Carona Del Corsa. The other fancied runner Olympus Mons who was sluggish at the start was never in the hunt. Interestingly, the two impressive winners of the three-year-olds race this season have both been the progeny of Air Strike.

Kashkha appreciated the step up in distance by comfortably winning the 2000 metres Gaganachukki Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Trevor Patel had Kashkha track pace-setting Vail well into the straight before storming ahead. Memoriter threw a semblance of a challenge but the favourite had enough reserves to carry the lead to the post. Memoriter held on to the second position ahead of late-rallying Ekalavya and Proud Prince.

Neil Devaney`s San Bernardino fought out a resolute battle with Habanero before snatching the verdict in the 1200 metres Flashing Star Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. The heavily supported So Mi Dar did not come out of the gates much to the anguish of her supporters. Blarney Stone was third. Irfan Ghatala trained Bold Move had it easy in the lower division of the race. The fight if any was for minor placings with Island Pearl staving off the well-backed Capstone to get the runner-up berth.

Parvati Byramji trained Piper Regina was driven out strongly by jockey Srinath to win the 1200 metres Haveri Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. The fancied runner came into contention with a furlong left in the race and had no problem in steering clear of the rest to win from Brooklyn Supreme and Bluejack. The lower division of the race saw Imtiaz Khan trained Call Me Maybe record an encore with a strong effort in the final furlong, getting past Amazonite for a comfortable win. Ultimate Power nosed out Royal Rein to save place money.
