Trafalgar keeps his date with Grand Annual Mile

By: Goldie Boy   March 16 , 2019

Jockey David Allan partnered trainer James Mckeown`s star in-the-making, Trafalgar, to a decisive victory to lift the prestigious 1,600m Grand Annual Mile, on Saturday. It was a back-to-back victory for the big made colt who had made a winning debut, exactly a month ago. The afternoon also witnessed jockey Suraj Narredu`s brilliance in the saddle while guiding trainer Vijay Singh`s two favourites – Alyssa and Cadman – in their respective events which were open betting races.

Trafalgar went to the start as an even-money favourite, thanks to Manvendra Singh`s Topnotch (Trevor Patel) who also attracted pots of wagering because of his last eye-catching run against Jaivant, in the Million. The full brother to Shivansh, was, however, no match for Trafalgar.
It was left to Vijay`s Inca to cut a hot pace but Allan settled Trafalgar behind; until the final turn, with Topnotch close in his tow.
Allan`s decided to be flexible, though the situation at the top of the home-turn, demanded wait and watch policy against the leader who was going a double-handful. He vigorously urged the favourite, to go pass the leader while Trevor, with 4-kg weight advantage, decided to ride a copy-book race. Allan`s tactics paid off as Trafalgar`s two-length lead proved decisive, leaving the opposition in a wild goose chase.

Suraj, popularly known as rider with high percentage wins in crunch situations, once again, won hearts of the Saturday race crowd. His two winners – Alyssa and Cadman – both favourites in the open betting races, won their respective events – the 1,400m Mamma`s Mink Handicap and the 1,600m Elusive Pimpernel Cup – in camera finishes. Alyssa, a 5/2 favourite, was ridden off the pace as Mr Fogg`s (app. P. Tejeshwar). Mustang (app. Rupal Singh) and Viareggio (Hindu Singh) made the running by turns but it was finally left it to Bharath Singh`s Lumos (C. Alford) to take the front-running role at the top of the straight. Lumos, nearly lasted out to win; until Alyssa walked in to the picture and stumped the leader, right at the post.

The story was no different in the Trophy event as Suraj made Cadman wait in the mid-division till turning for home. The winner, a 13/4 favourite in the betting, however, took over the running about 150m from home and defended the lead stoutly, first from Mckeown`s Shivalik Showers (Allan) and then from the late finishing Shyam Habbu`s quietly fancied runner, Raise A Grand (Dashrath), with Multitude (Neeraj Rawal) also contesting the issue in the closing stages of the race.

Bharath, however, pulled off a smart win in the 1,100m Rajcoomar Gujadhur Memorial Cup. Bharath`s Sereno (Dashrath) and Shyam Habbu`s Stallone (app. Sujit Paswan) were the 3/1 joint favourites but the former`s winning lead, established in the final 250m, worked to his advantage, in a race that was a virtual Mumbai race card.

There is hardly anything to write home about in rest of the events, which were meant for lower class horses but the for the records, trainer Harvinder Singh`s Zena produced a late run in the hands of Dashrath to beat, Sarfraz Khan`s Constance in the day`s opener, the 1,600m Safari Handicap.
The following event, the 1,200m Colorado Claro Handicap was picked up by trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s top-weighted runner, I Me N Myself, who delivered the goods at 4/1 in the hands of app. Sujit Paswan. The eight-year-old was, perhaps, running his good-bye run.
And finally, the concluding race, the 1,600m Finalist Handicap, was for the benefit of jockey R. Shelar who deserved to pick up a race after doing all the hard work during the five-month season. Shelar guided Seventh Step, a rank outsider, to victory over the long time leader Stellanova (app. Rupal Singh).
