Breezeofthesouth shines in his narrow victory

By: Goldie Boy   March 23 , 2019

Trainer Manvendra Singh`s strongly fancied runner, Breezeofthesouth (Dhanu Deora-up) claimed the 1,200m Mysore Race Club Cup, on Saturday. It was an amazing victory, worth repeatedly watching, in view of the horsemanship by the Delhi-based jockey on a six-year-old but courageous galloper. Manvendra`s rank-outsider, Praise The Gaze, also scored, handing the crafty trainer a deserving double. The afternoon also witnessed the fall of a number of favourites, in the seven-event card but trainer Bharath Singh stood as a saviour, for a change, as his two strongly fancied runners – Lumenac and Oaks Brook, both ridden by Dashrath Singh, managed to deliver the goods.

Coming back to the courageous victory of Breezeofthesouth in the hands of Dhanu Deora; both complimented each other, demonstrative their talent. The horse galloped resolutely, from almost wrong-end of the field, on the wide out while the jockey displayed his never-say-die attitude, once again, to re-confirm his talent that he was the rising star on the Indian turf circuit.

The victory of the 5/2 chance in the betting followed when trainer Shyam Habbu`s equally fancied runner, Southpaw, had taken over the running approaching the 200m marker, from changing leaders, Denny Crane (app. Sujit Paswan), Flag Flying (app. R.S. Bhati), Amorous White (app. P.Vikran, etc – all champion sprinter in their own right. Southpaw was in a comfortable lead but that did not dishearten neither the horse in question nor the rider. They went about their task that was almost impossible.

Half-an-hour earlier, Manvendra`s speedy but rank-outsider, Praise The Gaze (app. P. Tajeshwar) had opened the trainer`s account with a pillar-to-post victory to bag the 1,200m Ambretta Handicap.

Deora had also demonstrated his might, half-an-hour earlier, riding trainer Aashay Doctor`s 7/1 chance, Murakami, in the baby race, the 1,400m Own Opinion Plate. It was again a late and a desperately close finish that went in Deora`s favour as Vijay Singh`s equally less fancied Shivalik Sight (app. R.S. Bhati) was at the receiving-end and the verdict was a ‘nose`. In the same race Bharath`s Fancourt (Dashrath) was a strong fancy at 5/4 but the Sammid filly was never in the race.

Bharath, however, meant business during the afternoon and the victory of his colt, Lumenac, in the 1,100m Red Chieftan Handicap, confirmed his day`s intention. The four-year-old was held back in third or the fourth berth, till about the final turn before making his winning run as Aquitania (Ramandeep Bal) and Nextstar (Akash Rajput) tested their hooves early in the race.

Oaks Brook`s victory in the 1,400m Star Of Italy Handicap was also easily gained. The Bharath four-year-old was a 9/4 favourite and was brought into the contention from the mid-way as Aashay`s quietly fancied Multivalue (Deora) was being hailed as a winner.

The opening and the closing events were also picked up by less fancied winners – trainer James Mckeown`s Fabiola (Hindu Singh) and Hravinder Singh Bath`s Fiorelle (C. Alford).
