Agni prevails on day of favourites

Jockey Zervan guided Agni to victory in the 1200 metres Major Mujtaba Hussain Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the feature event of Wednesday`s Hyderabad races. After the mayhem of last week, the order was restored with fancied runners dominating the day`s proceedings. Jockey Suraj Narredu had a profitable day booting home three winners.

Agni was backed to the exclusion of the rest as the three-year-old had the benefit of summering at Bangalore and was well prepared with a race run. Jockey Zervan had to work his way on Agni from the widest draw. The progeny of Burden of Proof had enough speed to take a handy position as Rahil went on a start to finish mission. In the stretch, Agni managed to overhaul Rahil surged ahead but the favourite appeared to be faltering n the end going by the fact that Rahil was gaining ground in the end after being easily overhauled. Lockhart came up with a big effort only to miss the runner-up berth by a whisker.

Laxman Singh trained Top Link was driven out for a facile by jockey Suraj Narredu in the 1400 metres Fond Hope Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65., Top Link was backed with conviction to have a bold show. Suraj Narredu was relaxed on Top Link and settled the favourite in about the fifth position till turning for home before making his move. Top Link easily tackled Vijay`s Empire inside the final furlong and surged ahead for a comfortable win. Tootsie Roll came from way off the pace to occupy the runner-up berth ahead of Vijays Empire who failed to sustain his challenge.
  
  


Laxman Singh`s another ward Mozambique who had bounced back to winning ways during the Invitation Cup weekend races maintained the form with an easy win over the opposition. The speedy Mozambique led all the way and had no trouble in reaching the winning post with none in the opposition making an impression. Ashhad Asbar was astride the winner. Hope Is Eternal rallied from behind to take the second position ahead of N R I Symbol.

First timer Prince Valiant made a smashing debut in the 1200 metres Rani Laxmi Bai Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Mehrzad was backed spiritedly to have a strong show. The favourite led in earnest and in fact had a break of five lengths over the rest when Prince Valiant made his bid. Despite running green, Prince Valiant gathered steam, covered the ground with menacing strides and drew clear to eventually win by a widening margin of five lengths. Mehrzad managed to keep the second position from late rallying Angel Tesoro. Most runners in the fray looked far from ready. Faisal Hassan trained Top Saga who was second in demand in the betting, was taken to the front from the wide outside draw by jockey Suraj Narredu. The fancied runner stayed put to win the race comfortably from Premier Action who gave a futile chase. Flamingo Fame who went wide in the stretch managed to save place money. The heavily supported Born Greek made no show and finished in the ruck. Faisal Hassan trained Top Saga held off the spirited bid of Premier Action to win the lower division of the race. Suraj had Top Saga move briskly from the wide outside draw and take charge. Top Saga led all the way and reached the safety of the post before the late-finishing Premier Action could do any damage. Flaming Flame finished strongly though she went wide in the stretch. Born Greek who received considerable support in the betting ring, made no show.

Faisal Hassan trained Agilis who had the benefit of a race run won the1100 metres Cupid Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25 with a start to finish dash. Agilis drew clear in the final furlong and won with a great deal of ease at nourishing odds. Composure held off the heavily supported Cowboy`s Delight and All Star General to get the runner-up berth.

Balius from the stables of Hilton Sequeira provided an easy win for Suraj in the 1600 metres Warangal Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The progeny of Air Support led all the way and was in no danger of being caught up with. Wings of Eagles came up with a flourish towards the closing stages of the race, but it was clear that it was going to go in vain. Alta Vita was third.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Consigliori staved off a big threat from favourite Zamora to land the spoils in the 1400 metres Aristocracy Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 at nourishing odds. Apprentice jockey Suraj Prakash pushed Consigliori to take over the running on turning for home and the progeny of Air Support quickly went ahead and established what turned out to be a winning lead. Zamora finished with a rush only to miss the berth by a narrow margin. Havelock Cruise was third more than seven lengths behind.
