Square The Circle romps home in Police Trophy

  September 12 , 2019

Sajid Qureshi trained Square The Circle gave an assertive performance in the 1600 metres Police Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the feature event of Thursday`s Mysore races. Jockey Imran Khan was alert to his task right from the word `go` and applied relentless pressure on the fancied runner to keep the colt committed to the task and the effort paid ample dividends.

Velocidad who has let down punters time and again was once again made the favourite in the absence of any horse which could be backed with conviction. Square The Circle no doubt had credentials but the three-year-old colt often lost his chances at the gate itself and his rally in the stretch would only fetch him a position on the frame. Square The Circle had run a forward race last time out despite showing old habits. Imran Khan ensured that Square The Circle did not relax in the race and kept goading the horse to stay focused. It was clear inside the final two furlongs that Square The Circle would have his day as he began to move with a flourish under a strong ride by Imran Khan and drew clear in the final furlong. Square The Circle had last won 224 days ago. Reanna held off Brothers in Arms to get the runner-up berth while Velocidad ran a tame fourth.

Jockey Prabhakaran managed to correct the outward drift of Contributor in the nick of time and managed to drive out the lesser fancied runner from the stables of trainer Bobby to win the 1400 metres M W Chinnappa Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Contributor went on a start to finish mission but in the stretch began to veer out and was in danger of going on to the sand track. The wayward drift was corrected, and the fancied runner managed to retain the lead to win from the late-rallying Top Striker who finished with a rush only to miss the berth narrowly. Tremendous ran on to finish third ahead of favourite New Beginning who failed to build on start fluent win.

G T Surendra trained Admiral Act who was in serious betting obliged expectations in the1200 metres B A Nanaiah Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Jockey Manohar took Admiral Act to the front from the start and the fancied runner stayed put there without being troubled by any of the runners and checked in comfortably clear of Valkyrie. Willow Glen held off Segera to save place money. Favourite Kings Command made no show.

Satish Narredu trained Genuine Star brought off an upset in the 1200 metres Psychic Strength Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Nostradamus led from the start and held the lead till the final furlong but surrendered meekly when Genuine Star in the hands of jockey Mark unleashed a powerful run. There was a cluster finish for minor placings with Duxton saving place money ahead of Darahasini and the rest. Those who back trainer Sharat Kumar`s horses must be prepared to lose often because the trainer rarely wins on a fancied runner on a consistent basis. So, it was with Odyssey who was backed down as a strong favourite in the lower division of the Psychic Strength Plate. Kruger Park and Premier Premises led aggressively in front with Odyssey in the third position but not making much progress in the race. Kruger Park had the lead going into the final furlong as Premier Premises weakened and then held off the late rallying Master of War. Odyssey made no show and finished a tame fourth and reportedly pulled up lame. Kruger Park had finished more than nine lengths behind Odyssey in her last effort.

Dheeraj Venkatswamy trained Toyo Rose held on grimly to land the spoils as a favourite in the 1400 metres Panchgani Plate (Div I), a race for horses 20 to 45. Tokyo Rose, who was the firm favourite, shot ahead with a furlong left in the race as the front-running Bold Move shifted out paving the way for jockey John to push the favourite along the rails. Tokyo Rose survived some anxious moments as Blue Jack finished with a big effort from a long way back, but the winning post came to the rescue of the favourite. Bold Move stayed to take the third position. Neil Darashah trained Inky Black based on the noteworthy second behind Track Striker was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the lower division of the Panchgani Plate. Jockey Chetan Gowda took Inky Black to the front within the first furlong and the favourite enjoyed a good break which held the five-year-old mare in good stead as she was faltering in the end and Dagobert closed in menacingly only to miss the berth by a neck. Chetan Gowda was unseated from the saddle soon after crossing the winning post Find retained the third place from the late finishing Raw Gold by a whisker.

Sharat Kumar trained Reczai got the better of Piper Regina to win the 1400 metres One Life To Love Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Reczai who hadn`t won for 460 days was backed strongly along with Piper Regina. Even as Piper Regina was getting the upper hand in the final furlong, Reczai breathed fire on her outside and sailed away for a comfortable win in the hands of jockey Arshad Alam. Haloween`s Way ran was third.
