Phenomenal Cruise prevails in a sensational finish

By: Tippu Sultan   September 16 , 2019

Donald Netto trained Phenomena Cruise was brilliantly ridden by jockey Zervan to record a sensational win in the 1600 metres Chief Minister`s Cup, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Favourite Corfe Castle was not up to conceding wait to his adversaries though he did fight hard but was relegated to the fourth position.

Corfe Castle was expected to win again though the terms of the race were against him. He was set to concede weight to some well-performed horses who had struck good form. Among them, Wave Ride and Phenomenal Cruise stood out as the ones who could cause an upset.

Sandesh took Wave Rider on a start to finish mission bid with Corfe Castle in proximity followed by Be Sure, Phenomenal Cruise and the rest. Wave Ride managed to keep the lead deep in the stretch as Corfe Castle took his own time to quicken. In the meanwhile, Be Sure joined issue. Wave Rider shifted out under pressure and this provided an excellent opportunity for Phenomenal Cruise to shoot through along the rails. Zervan seized the chance and he was aided by the speed shown by Phenomenal Cruise which enabled the lesser fancied runner to shoot through. Phenomenal Cruise went ahead but had to fight hard till crossing the post as Wave Rider fought on with Be Sure and the late-warming Corfe Castle all closing with a rush. Phenomenal Cruise held on by ΒΌ of a length while Wave Rider was a neck better of Be Sure. Corfe Castle was a close fourth.

Satheesh trained Flamboyant Lady looked a cinch in the 1200 metres Swamy Ramananda Tirtha Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds as the withdrawal of Flying Queen ensured that the favourite was only taking on a backward lot of horses. Jockey Sandesh took Flamboyant Lady on a start to finish mission and the favourite enjoyed the foray in front and was comfortably ahead all through the race. Alliston tried to catch up with the front-runner but in vain. Unstoppable was third.

The drift in the price of favourite Consigliori in the 1600 metres Heritage Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, was puzzling, to say the least. Netto trained Havelock Cruise came in for one-sided support with the odds on Consigliori doubling to what he was originally quoted at. Consigliori had beaten Havelock Cruise by a big margin when the two clashed on the last occasion. Gusty Look who had recoded a matter of fact victory in his last essay also came in for considerable support. Jockey Ajeet Kumar took Consigliori on a start to finish mission with Havelock Cruise in chase enjoying an uncontested lead which often is of crucial value in determining the chances of the front-runner. Havelock Cruise put pressure on the front-runner in the straight and drew level but Consigliori responded well to the urgings and skipped clear in the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort. Gusty Look ran on late to finish third.

Hilton Sequeira trained Tokyo Jam finally broke the maidens` rank in the 12th attempt by justifying the favouritism in the 1100 metres Perceived Value Plate, a race for horses 20 to 45. Somebody had to break the maiden`s ranks because the race was reserved for non-winners and after many failed attempts as a fancied runner, Tokyo Jam obliged in the hands of jockey Akshay Kumar. Mehrzad attempted runaway tactics in the hands of apprentice jockey Gaurav Singh but inside the final furlong began to falter. Tokyo Jam, who was in the chase, collared the front-runner with 100 metres left in the race and stretched out to win from Promiseofhappiness who made a rally, but the ground conceded was too much to bridge and had to settle for the second spot.

The long-shot Baywatch Babe from the stables of Prasad Raju clung on tenaciously in the hands of jockey Sai Kumar to stave off a strong bid of Running Fire to win the 1200 metres Dynamic Dancer Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Srinivas Reddy trained Man Apart was backed strongly to win but apprentice jockey Afroz Khan had what appeared a bad fall within the first furlong as the saddle slipped. Baywatch Babe was under pressure to retain the lead from the fancied Running Fire who made a desperate bid but fell short in the end. Smarty closed with a rush to finish a close third, a head behind the runner-up.

Leo D`Silva trained Ashwa Raftar was heavily backed to win the 1400 metres Raja Mehboob Karan Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 but as it happens when the stable has more than one runner, by coincidence or by intention the one with the long odds invariably wins. So, it was the case again as Leo`s other horse Tootsie Roll won at the expense of Ashwa Raftar. These days it is difficult to back top jockeys like Suraj or Trevor because they are invariably riding the fancied runners but are not delivering on a consistent basis. After Pentagon led the field deep into the stretch and weakened, Tootsie Roll showed up on the wide outside and shot ahead in the final furlong. Apprentice jockey Jitendra Singh kept Tootsie Roll in front despite the long shot drifting out of a straight course and managed to win comfortably. Ashwa Raftar made no impression when finishing second best ahead of News O`Star.
