Cosmic Ray wins Guineas in record time

  September 19 , 2019

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Cosmic Ray won the Raghulal Mysore 1000 Guineas, the first classic of the season, in a record time of one minute 36.6 seconds at Mysore on Thursday breaking the record held by Field Marshall by a fraction of a second. The disappointment of the race was the poor performance of favourite Thailand who perhaps may have been undone by the pace at which she went in front.

After running a great race against Well Connected in the Deccan Fillies Championships at Hyderabad, Thailand was widely expected to have a bold show. Cosmic Ray no doubt enjoyed a lot of hype though her performance in the Bangalore classic had been a disappointment. As such, Thailand went to the post as an overwhelming favourite with Cosmic Ray being the only other horse to enjoy support in the ring.

Thailand who was sporting the blinkers for the first time was pushed to take over the running by jockey Trevor Patel and the horse went at a good clip which was to work against her advantage as she literally ground to a halt in the final furlong. The pace helped Suraj Narredu to settle Cosmic Ray in the second position with the others spaced out behind. Rounding the final turn, Suraj made his move on Cosmic Ray and much to the surprise of everyone including that of the jockey of the eventual winner, Thailand simply gave up and appeared to be in some distress. Thailand reportedly came back sore on her left fore. Cosmic Ray overhauled the front-runner without having to be stretched and went away for an easy by a widening margin of three lengths. Abira ran on from behind to get the second place ahead of Lady of Luxury.

The track was conducive for fast timings and most races saw horses clocking above par timings. Chennai based King T`chala recorded the second win on this track when staving off the late bid of Castaway to win the 1200 metres Gool & Soli Poonawalla Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Castaway could have won with a better-quality guidance from the saddle. From a handy second position, King T`chala bounced ahead at the top of the straight and opened a good lead over the rest. Jockey Darshan had to work his way from about the fifth or sixth position at the final bend and he did not get a clean passage and by the time he angled out the filly and brought her with a good effort, KingT`chala was in the vicinity of the post. Castaway`s finishing burst could only fetch the runner-up berth ahead of Air Command.

Lokanath trained Ultimate Power benefitted by the good forward run and had it easy in the 1200 metres S Hajee Memorial Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 0 to 25. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, Ultimate Power came into strong contention approaching the final furlong and easily overtook Desert Angel who had rallied well after being sluggish at the gates and went away for a win by a margin of over four lengths. Spiritualqueen occupied the third position. Arjun Mangalorkar trained Honey Trap finally broke the maidens` ranks in the lower division of the race. Under a strong ride by jockey John, Honey Trap managed to pull off a last stride win over Swiss Tigress. Senator saved place money.

Neil Darashah trained Defender who had gone down fighting to Royal Senator looked too good in the 1400 metres Sidapur Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Jockey Imran Khan took Defender to the front from the outside draw and the progeny of Tazahum had no problem in staying clear of the rest to win the race with a great deal of ease. Decisive held off Scarlet Princess to get the runner-up berth. The lower division of the race was won by Azhar Ali trained memoriter who beat on money favourite Cuban Pete with a measure of comfort. Memoriter who was available at good odds, chased Cuban Pete well into the straight before asserting his supremacy in the final furlong in the hands of jockey Chetan Kalay. Girl With Pearl got the third position with Nagada edging out Chula Vista to find a place on the frame.

Lesser fancied Turf Legend from the stables of trainer Rakesh got a dream run along the rails and jockey Umesh pushed the progeny of Sedgefield to quicken with a furlong left in the race. Turf Legend covered the leeway on Stormy Atlantic briskly and swept away for a comfortable win by a margin of two lengths in the 1200 metres Original Vel B Ashok Kumar Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Brabourne came up with a late dash to snatch the runner-up berth from Stormy Atlantic.

Rakesh had a double for the day as the well-backed Vijaya Arjun recorded an easy win in the 1600 metres T Dougall Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Tashkent who came in for big support was driven out to take over the running within the first furlong and the favourite shot her bolt well before the race came to the boil. Vijaya Arjun who was handily placed easily overtook the front-runner in the stretch and was well clear of Eudora who occupied the second position ahead of Veni Vidi Vici. The favourite disappeared without a trace.
