Mozambique makes it four in a row

By: Tippu Sultan   September 23 , 2019

Laxman Singh trained Mozambique who has struck imposing form recorded the fourth successive win by swamping the opposition in the 1200 metres Totaram`s Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Punters enjoyed a good run as favourites ruled the roost.

Mozambique went to the post as a strong favourite based on the good run that the five-year-old mare is enjoying. Jockey Akshay Kumar had the speedy customer in front and Mozambique did not come under pressure from any of the contestants as she checked in well clear of Titus who gave a chase without hope. Before Mozambique struck sublime form late in the winter season, Titus had recorded a convincing win over Mozambique, but the former seems to be in the form of her life. Ambitious Approach ran on to take the third position.

The 1200 metres Malvado Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds had contestants who did not have good racing form and as such the market trend was to be relied upon in deciding the horse to be backed. The market trend saw one-sided support for Laxman Singh trained Bedazzled who had apprentice Gopal Singh in the saddle though no allowance could be claimed. That itself indicated the confidence of the trainer. Gopal Singh had Best In Show chased Coconut Coast into the straight before assuming command in the stretch. Despite drifting out alarmingly, Best In Show had enough lead to win by a margin of two lengths over Bedazzled and Top In Turf. This was the first victory recorded by the apprentice. The heavily backed Urvasi obliged in the lower division of the race. The Satyanarayana trainee lacked early speed and fell back with Gusty Note leading all the way. Urvasi got all the openings along the rails with Rohit Kumar showed good anticipation. Urvasi`s cause was also helped because Gusty Note drifted out alarmingly. Urvasi shot ahead inside the final 100 metres and won from Gusty Note. Sputnic finished third ahead of late rallying Bob Campbell who came from tailed off last position to finish a suggestive third. Ravinder Singh trained Wah Ms Zara had it easy in Division III of the race with a start to finish mission and winning unchallenged in the hands of jockey Suraj Narredu who thus had the third winner of the day. Healthandhappiness was second ahead of Flag of Honour.

Hilton Sequeira trained Roll Call towered over the opposition in the 2000 metres Royal Terns Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 and the one-sided support was only to be expected. Francis Bacon who had come out of the maidens rank in his last effort was also in betting. Charlie Brown did the front-running with Francis Bacon in close attendance with Roll Coll eased in about the fourth or fifth position. Charlie Brown kicked on resolutely even as Francis Bacon faded out. Suraj Narredu brought Roll Coll on the wide outside and the favourite responded well to the urgings and managed to overwhelm the front-runner inside the final 100 metres to record a comfortable win. Francis Bacon was third.

Leo D`Silva trained Paso Robles trounced the opposition in the 1400 metres Raja Saheb of Itkyal Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Suraj Narredu kept Paso Robles in the second position as Excelsior whose rider Afroz Khan lost both his stirrups led the field into the straight. Paso Robles cruised past the front-runner in the stretch and drew clear of Galloping Gangster who chased in vain. Paso Robles checked in by a widening margin of three lengths over Galloping Gangster. City of Wisdom was faraway third eight lengths adrift of the runner-up.
