Smith And Wesson rules on a day of `doosras`

By: Goldie Boy   September 24 , 2019

Trainer Vijay Singh`s 5/1 shot, Smith And Wesson (Hindu Singh-up), returned to the winning ways when the five-year-old horse took the measure of a quietly fancied runner, Multiglory (Mohit Singh), in Tuesday`s feature event, the 2,000m Smart Ruler Cup. The afternoon witnessed intermittent showers but that wasn`t detrimental for the two up-coming apprentices – Rupal Singh and Sujit Paswan – who dominated the proceedings in the seven-event card, with a double apiece.

It was Vijay`s favourite, Cold Frontier, ridden by the stable`s regular jockey, Nikhil Naidu, who attracted a huge support in the betting at 2/1 but the stable`s ‘doosra`, Smith And Wesson, finally, decided to put his best foot forward after two disappointing runs. Surprisingly, last Wednesday, Smith And Wesson, ridden by Suraj Narredu, had performed like a dud when out-classed by the stable`s Naidu-ridden, Sniper -- over a similar trip. Multiglory, too, has been performing like ‘also ran` in his last four starts but grew up wings on this occasion.

It is a sorry state of affairs for the home punters as heads hang in shame when the other sports enthusiasts, across the country, bracket the RCTC with the Channai and Delhi-like centres. The ‘doosras` from the two stables, the other is anybody`s guess, are in vogue and it poses a difficult kind of problem for the members of the Fourth Estate to justify their operations that also involves bigwigs and the machinery that conducts the sport. The golden boys of the turf – Two Vs -- always get away with some excuse or the other while axe waits on the lesser names in the game.

Enterprising apprentices continue to rule the RCTC ground and three of them picked up five races in the day`s card. Sujit Paswan and Rupal Singh, for instance, continue to be in demand and they claimed a brace of wins apiece while P. Vikram scored a lone winner.

Rupal ‘s was right on the target in the day`s opener, the 1,200m Idaho Handicap, when the apprentice guided trainer Jasbir Singh`s solidly fancied runner, Modification, to a ‘nose, victory over Manvendra Singh`s charge, Midnight Magic (Mudassar Nazar). It was a touch and go situation but Nazar`s failure cannot be contested on a tricky ride who always needs to cover much ground with a late run. Modification, on the other hand, was ridden in a copy-book manner, chasing the speedy Shanayaa`s Pet (app. Aditya Jaiswal) till passing the 300m marker, before shooting clear of the opposition.

It wasn`t Nazar`s and Manvendra`s day. Half-an-hour later, the jockey tried his hardest, again, on the trainer`s next chance, Tiberon, in the 1,200m Great Scot Handicap. Nazar, however, came across one better in trainer Vikash`s ‘doosra` Dangal (Rupal), an 8/1. It was`t a coincidence that Vikash`s Uncrowned King (Ajeet Kumar) cornered a sizeable betting in the ring as a 13/4 joint-favourite with Tiberon.

The two favourites ran in the mid-division while Javed Khan`s Stelvio Pass (Satish Nayak) led a merry dance. Both Dangal and Tiberon made a late move but the superior acceleration of the former ensured the prize. An objection, by Nazar against the winner, that followed, lacked the punch and was rightly thrown away in minutes.

Apprentice Paswan took off from where Rupal had left off. In the 1,100m Kiltoi Handicap, the courageous jockey took trainer Bharath Singh`s 11/10 favourite, Tia Queen, to the front and had an easy measure of Harvinder Bath`s debutante, Whispering Grass (C. Alford).

Paswan returned to the winners` enclosure, with another pillar-to-post effort on trainer Shafiq Khan`s Beatrix, to claim the 1,800m Credit Squeeze Handicap. In the same race, Arti Doctor`s 2/1 favourite, Elusive Wave (C. Alford) looked a mere passenger, chasing the winner, a 5/1 shot, almost throughout the journey.

Apprentice P. Vikram was at his enterprising best on trainer Raunak Banerji`s 6/1 chance, Joss, who was ridden well off the pace, till the final turn but galloped on strongly in the stretch-run to beat Vijay`s Summer Hill (Naidu) and the Arti Doctor`s 2/1 favourite, Fire Opal (Alford), in the 1,600m Silver Dawn Handicap.

Alford, too, was in his usual old self on another of Harvinder`s fancied runner, Demonstrator. The champion rider of yesteryears rode a well calculated finish to down Viaksh`s fancied runner, Dil Mangey More (Rupal), in the 1,400m Safari Handicap.
